Seaspan Ferries (SFC) services the Vancouver Island supply chain with the most reliable customer focused commercial ferry service. For general freight products, consumer goods and regulated commodities and automobiles, Seaspan Ferries provides a daily, scheduled truck and trailer ferry services between our conveniently located terminals on the Mainland at Tilbury in Delta and Surrey, and on Vancouver Island at Duke Point Nanaimo, and Victoria (Swartz Bay).

Seaspan Ferries has an excellent opportunity for a bright enthusiastic Intern to introduce a number of data analytics initiatives for Seaspan Ferries. We are early in “Data maturity model” as projects will cover:

Prescriptive Analytics
Diagnostics Analytics
Predictive Analytics
This will lay the foundation for future – Artificial Intelligence (AI)

This a unique opportunity for a young professional to lay down the foundation of data analytics while gaining a deeper exposure to our marine industry.

Duties/Accountabilities:
The successful applicant for this internship will be tasked with a number of analytical initiatives to support the SFC operational team. The successful candidate will be tasked with the following projects:

Develop Predictive Data Analytic tools based on current internal/external data, which includes:
Future demand; daily, monthly, quarterly and yearly
Terminal volume flow; daily expected hourly yard volumes
Reservations utilization; expected reservations for the day
Review all available data and develop a series of KPIs that would populate a Dashboard to drive Operational efficiencies for the SFC team. Prescriptive and Diagnostic analysis would be required to determine forward thinking KPIs to drive operational efficiencies.

Competitive Analysis:
Develop a competitive model that would analysis how a competitor could enter the market.
Price sensitivity for a new competitor
Develop data bases and analytical tools to leverage the date for:
Fuel Analysis for new dual fuel Swift and Reliant (LNG)
Phone call monitoring from Shortell
Hostling
Logistics Modelling.

To be successful in this role, you will require:
Enrollment in a university degree program, with a specialization in applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering operations/business research, machine learning and/or related data analytics fields.
Good understanding of how advanced analytics (predictive, prescriptive and descriptive) techniques/technology that can be used to solve business problems using current trends.
Familiar with tools, such as linear algebra, regression analysis, Time Series, data normalization and variational autoencoding.
Good understanding of dimensional modeling and very good understanding of data warehouse / data mart architecture.
Experience working with data, through academic research, independent projects, and/or prior internships.
Capability for pulling data from various data sources and drawing insights as well as interpreting the results.
Desire to work in a collaborative team environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Power BI.
Problem solver, Optimization & Simulation.
Business knowledge in Marine transportation and logistics not necessary but would be beneficial.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
