The Opportunity

Applied Research & Innovation Services

Reporting to the Director of Applied Research, the Senior Mechanical Engineer (Research Associate) leads an applied research, development and commercialization program in association with researchers and engineers within ARIS, SAIT and collaborations across the Province. This position is responsible for supervising at least 3 engineers/technicians as well as personal involvement in developing/designing new industrial equipment and processes and designing new plants and equipment or modifying existing ones. The design they will be involved in will create products ranging from primary oil and gas, carbon capture, aircraft, medical, sports and others. The position is responsible for developing new industrial process equipment and designing new process plants and equipment or modifying existing ones.

Note: This is a temporary salaried position until September 25, 2020.

The Role

Designing and testing new equipment & processes with some original development work
Collecting data required to make improvements and modifications
Overseeing the construction of new equipment plants
Using and developing simulation software
Purchasing and installing equipment related to additive and digital manufacturing
Using scientific principles related strength of materials etc
Supervising plant operations
Investigating and troubleshooting plant/process problems
Scheduling and coordinating work to tight deadlines and within financial budgets
Ensuring that equipment works to its specification and to appropriate capacities
Assessing safety and environmental issues
Liaising with installation/project engineers and specialists
Ensuring safe working conditions and compliance with health and safety legislation

Work Environment and Equipment
The Research Associate will develop equipment and processes that may include pumps, filters, centrifuges, membranes, electrical power up to 500 volts or more, computers and software control systems. Work may also include the use of a wide range of design and simulation software. The Research Associate will be required to know and understand how to put these types of machines to work in some cases together in order to solve a problem or demonstrate the efficacy of a new process that they have either developed or acquired rights to from elsewhere. The incumbent will be responsible for working with, protecting and contributing to a client’s intellectual property and assigns ownership of such to the client. Prototyping can be from table top to “high-bay” scale.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering and at least a seven years industry experience in the same area, at least 2 years as a Manager/Supervisor or Diploma in Mechanical or Manufacturing Technology with 12 years experience in the area and at least 2 as a supervisor/manager of designers/product developers.
Effective communication interpersonal, analytical and problem solving skills and a good working knowledge of EDI in the workplace.
Track record of successful proposal writing in grants or industry RFPs.
An aptitude for mechanical design, product development, widget manufacturing.
High level familiarity with Microsoft Suite of Office Product, Project Management Software, Solidworks and other Design Packages, Programming for CNC Equipment.
