Areas of responsibility include overseeing the daily functioning of the Richmond Concrete Lab, QA KPI management and support to the GVA Quality Manager, and Operations and Sales teams.

The position is the recognized expert and trainer in laboratory equipment, tests and procedures, CSA A23.1 & 2 and CSA A283 specifications, and Value-Added Products. The successful applicant for this position will have considerable knowledge of cement, concrete, aggregate and admixture technology.

This position will be based at our Richmond, BC Lab location.

Stewards and enforces Lafarge Health and Safety Practices in the Richmond Lab
Maintains an active presence supervising and managing hourly lab staff in all regards, including
Addressing safety concerns and engaging employees in Lafarge H&S policy, generating and maintaining Safe Working Procedure documents
Co-ordination of daily lab activities and special projects to meet deadlines
Upkeep of field and lab equipment calibrations, lab certifications for accreditation
Performance management and yearly performance reviews of hourly staff
Is the expert in the preparation, batching, mixing and testing of concrete mix designs and raw materials. Carries out lab work as needed.
Supervises technical special projects e.g. maturity testing, specialty admix trials
Recording, collection, analyses and reporting of technical data, including
Reporting and tracking departmental KPIs
Monitoring mix performance and conducting failure investigations
Generating technical reports and data summaries
Maintaining GVA technical data and file repositories, building and implementing spreadsheet infrastructure and template documents
Close communication and co-ordination with QC Supervisor, and collaboration on a comprehensive quality report monthly
Operations-related technical activities in the field and plants as directed by the Quality Manager, including
Coordinating, supervising and reporting on plant trials
Conducting and reporting on quality-related site investigations
Undertaking internal QA plant audits and production reviews
Attending and supporting at specialty pours
Supports GVA Sales team with mix design submittals, performance histories, and technical consultation
Maintains a regular field and plant presence, close communication with QC field technicians and batchmen

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (BASc) or Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology required
ACI & CCIL Concrete Certification is an asset

Experience and Skill Set:
At least 3 years work experience with laboratory or field testing of cement, concrete or aggregate products (mix designs, preparation of test samples etc)
At least 3 years work experience in an industrial or construction environment, ideally ready-mix concrete operations or commercial construction sites
Supervisory or management experience, experience specifically with laboratory staff and/or technicians an asset
Experience with maintaining a lab and undergoing audits desirable, experience specifically with CSA/CCIL accreditation a strong asset

Key skills:
Strong fundamental materials engineering principles, intermediate knowledge of concrete technology
Strong written communication and reporting skills
Demonstrated strong interpersonal communicator and leader
Strong data analysis skills and computer literacy; proven MS Excel experience and minimum intermediate level skills
Detail-oriented with proven problem solving/critical thinking skills
Familiarity with CSA 23.1 & 2, CSA A283 an asset
Knowledge of ready-mix production and delivery equipment and/or concrete construction practice an asset

Work Environment:
This role requires someone who can work with autonomy and leadership with teams at operational industrial plants and on construction sites.
Must be able to work in outdoor and indoor work environments
Able to perform a variety of tasks, including moderate to heavy lifting
This role is will require the handling of cements, aggregates, concrete and testing equipment.
Ability to work long hours – Weekend and evening work is involved
