In 2019, Lumibird expanded its operations in North America with the creation of Lumibird Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. Following the recent acquisition of HALO Photonics, Lumibird Canada is now seeking to grow this Ottawa office, to become the home of Lumibird’s special projects group; focusing on research, development and commercialization of innovative optical solutions aimed at harsh environment applications such as automotive, Space and Defense.
As a key player of Lumibird’s special projects R&D team in Ottawa, the ideal candidate will be responsible for developing identifying potential clients, furthering relationships with existing customers, and negotiating contracts. The incumbent will also be expected to work with the Lumibird marketing department to conduct market research and contribute to the development of the strategic business development plan.
Reporting to the Senior Engineer, the Application Engineer be responsible for promoting the Lumibird Canada products and extending the presence in a wide range of markets, throughout the scientific, automotive, aerospace and defense industries. Our global reach through expert discovery and exploration of new and untapped business opportunities and relationships. The incumbent will be expected to use initiative to lead business development opportunities, to secure and support new and existing customers. Highly skilled at sales and business operations, the Sales Associate will therefore be part of a small, but talented, multi-disciplinary R&D team, dedicated to the development of innovative light-based solutions.
The Application Engineer will be expected to:
Take ownership of the entire sales process from trade show coverage, through lead generation and qualification, positioning of product, customer procurement, and post-sales support.
Define and execute a national sales strategy to meet sales and margin targets
Establish new opportunities and customers in research, industrial, and OEM market segments
Work with new and existing clients to establish rapport and arrange meetings
Manage OEM accounts from sales through receivables as assigned by sales management
Increasing the value of current customers while attracting new ones
Assist in closing invoicing as required.
Provide accurate opportunity and territory forecasts based on both prospect pipeline and market analysis.
Attend trade shows and conferences as required by management
Support the development of quotes and proposals for clients
Responds promptly to customer needs; and solicits customer feedback to improve service
Provide support to other Lumibird subsidiaries and departments as required
Support external relations with customers, suppliers, subcontractors, universities, external laboratories and other business fields.
Participate in national and international travel as required to develop business opportunities
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in physical science (Engineering, Physics, Electo-Optics, or equivalent)
10+ years of experience in professional sales experience
Extensive knowledge of academic, automotive, aerospace and/or defense market segments
Ability to flourish with minimal guidance, be proactive, and handle uncertainty
Skilled at interfacing with customers, suppliers, sales staff, product development engineers, and managers in a team-oriented environment
Highly organized, with an ability to efficiently handle multiple projects simultaneously
Excellent judgment, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Superior verbal, and written, communication and negotiation skills
Exceptional attention to detail
Strong desire to be part of a research and development team that is creating the next generation of optics and electro-optical devices
The candidate must be eligible for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and Security Clearance at the Level II/Secret
In addition, the following qualifications would be considered an asset:
Knowledge of optical and LASER principles
Experience with LASERs; design, manufacturing, assembly, or testing
Previous experience in sales of (LASER) systems for harsh environments, such as automotive, defense and/or aerospace
Bilingual in French/English
