Should there be insufficient qualified candidates available for the above position, VCH may fund post basic training education.

Eligibility for post basic training education is restricted to applicants with a minimum of 2 year recent acute medical or surgical RN experience. Preference to applicants with high acuity training and/or experience. Applicants must successfully complete the post basic education prior to working in the Department.

Candidates accepting this training opportunity agree to remain with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a regular status nurse in the area of nursing applicable to the education program for which they are hired for at least 18 months subsequent to completing training.

This will ensure that candidates are able to consolidate and apply skills in the specialty area that VCH has supported and funded candidates to complete. In the event that a candidate leaves the area of nursing applicable to the education program for which they were hired or VCH in under 18 months, VCH will seek to recover the cost of the program.

Funding will be 100% of wages, tuition and books during the training program.

Online theory prerequisites (if required): March 30-September 13 2020
Education days on: April 22, June 10 & 23, July 23, August 6 & 19
Full-time training at BCIT and practicum locations from: September 21 - December 17, 2020
  • course dates will be modified based on previous courses completed, VCH only funds for required courses.

As a Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit you will:

Provide nursing care to high risk critically ill clients with unpredictable outcomes attached to life-support equipment, and/or clients in post-anaesthetic recovery, both by working independently and as a member of a interdisciplinary team.
Enhance quality of life from the perspective of the client/family.
Consult, confer, and collaborate with other health care givers.
Demonstrate expertise and leadership in nursing practice.
Maintain and advance your own clinical competence.
Participate on designated hospital committees/teams and approved research projects as assigned.

Education & Experience

Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).
Completion of a recognized critical care nursing program or two years' recent, related clinical experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

Broad knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a client/family centred model of care.
Broad knowledge of BCCNP standards for nursing practice.
Thorough knowledge of the indications, actions, reactions, routes, dosages, and side effects of anaesthetic and other drugs used in critical care environment.
Thorough knowledge of nursing problems commonly encountered in a critical care environment.
Thorough knowledge of the physiological and behavioural aspects of complex critical illnesses.
Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care.
Demonstrated ability in nursing practice to assess and manage critical and life-threatening situations.
Demonstrated ability to respond immediately and appropriately to sudden emergencies.
Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
Demonstrated ability to plan and implement plans of care.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
Demonstrated ability to communicate with, and deal effectively with, clients and their families, co-workers, physicians, and other health care staff.
Demonstrated ability to communicate in writing accurately, concisely, and clearly.
Demonstrated ability to teach clients and their families.
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work direction.
Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques
