Nunatsiavut Marine Inc. (NMI), a subsidiary of Nunatsiavut Group of Companies (NGC), is looking to hire Freight Handers based out of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL. This position reports to the Yard/Warehouse Foreman.

As a Freight Handler you represent Nunatsiavut Marine Inc (NMI) in a critical role on the frontline of NMI's facility in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. This role is responsible for all matters related to the receiving and loading of cargo at the dock facility, including vessels, warehouse, dock, and laydown areas. Providing exceptional customer service is a top priority for this position as the Freight Handler is in frequent communication with customers on a daily basis. Furthermore, the Freight Handler will measure, weigh, and organize incoming freight. The Freight Handler is also responsible to promote safety and environmental stewardship as well as adhere to and promote company policies within the overall organization and will work closely with the Foreman to ensure compliance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures a high level of customer service is provided to walk-in customers;
  • Ensures customer complaints are addressed and escalated to appropriate channels, as required;
  • Load/unload freight to/from containers, trailers, vehicles, vessels, either manually or by using equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, or lift straps, at a pace that meets or exceeds productivity goals and standards;
  • Provides general upkeep of dock facilities, ensuring cleanliness and safety;
  • Measure, weight, sort, and organize incoming freight, while recording information relevant for billing purposes;
  • Freight handling will include sorting, wrapping goods, repacking and labeling, pallet repair, and other duties;
  • Records and reports any notable damages to incoming or outgoing freight;
  • Serves as linesman for arriving and departing vessels;
  • Provides access control and traffic direction as required;
  • Endeavors to utilize Nunatsiavut Marine Inc.’s assets to their maximum purpose;
  • Collaborates with other entities owned wholly or partially by the Nunatsiavut Group of Companies;
  • Performs other duties as required by the Foreman or Port Manager;


  • Forklift Operator Safety Certificate required.
  • Experience in Customer Service; working with or dealing with the public.


  • Relevant education and/or vocational training and safety would be considered an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preference will be given to beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement. Applicants are asked to clearly state their beneficiary status on their cover letter or resume when applying. Criminal Record Checks will be required. The successful candidate must be a resident of or willing to relocate to the Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL area at their own expense. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience.
