Reporting to the Program Manager, the Residential Rehabilitation Counsellor is responsible for promoting the rights of participants residing in residential programs with an acquired brain injury by facilitating independence and empowerment, enhancing quality of life, and implementing program activities as required, and in accordance with the Agency’s mission and the philosophy of the program.
- Provide support to participants which may include assisting participants complete their routines in accordance with their Individual Support Plan (ISP), attendant care duties such as toileting, changing briefs, addressing participant concerns, feeding participants etc.
- Assist with ongoing program development, assessment and evaluation of the participant’s ISP by identifying and communicating changes i.e. behaviour, routine, or progress, to the Case Facilitator.
- Provide supportive counselling by promoting participation in social functions, arranging transportation, identifying inappropriate behaviour and redirecting participants to alternative action.
- Complete administration and documentation for medications as per Agency policies and practices.
- Responsible and accountable for meeting shift expectations and tasks as assigned within a program, job site or specific to any given participant; completing expectations as Shift Coordinator when assigned.
- Communicate effectively between participants and staff via, counsellor notes, email, work binders, observation sheets, etc...in accordance with the Agency’s documentation policies and procedures.
- In emergency situations or fire drills, required to assist in the evacuation of participants and carry out duties as per the Agency’s Emergency Response Plan.
- Maintain a safe environment by complying with all aspects of the Agency’s Health and Safety Program in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act
- Responsible for maintaining a high level of job knowledge, skill, work habits, and professionalism by attending team meetings, mandatory training refreshers, participating in education seminars, conferences, and workshops.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements:
- Preference of one (1) year of work experience in social services and experience with implementing individual support plans.
- Completion of 50% of a degree or 75% of a diploma in a related program
- Knowledge of and abilities in attendant care duties, transferring and lifting
- Computer literate and effective working skills with Agency software
- High degree of resourcefulness, problem solving abilities, accountability and dependability
- Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
- Must be physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the position and develop an excellent rapport with participants and co-workers.
- Valid CPR/SFA Certificate and current training in Crisis Intervention Management
- Willing to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Police Check specific to the agency
- Willing to obtain a certified drivers abstract
- Current valid class ‘G’ driver’s license and daily access to an insured passenger vehicle
- Valid insurance coverage including $1,000,000 in vehicle liability coverage and coverage for non-owned auto
- A preferred asset also includes proficiency in speaking/reading French
Working as a team and independently within residential setting; may be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions etc…; exposure to the threat of physical or verbal abuse; direct and personal responsibility for the care, welfare and safety of the individuals we support; direct intervention in crisis and emergency situations.
Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting up to 50 lbs, pushing/pulling wheelchairs/walkers; manual dexterity required to use computers, kitchen equipment etc….
