Peto MacCallum Ltd. is currently seeking an Intermediate Technologist to join our Building Science team, located at our Toronto office. Reporting to the Project Manager, this position will conduct field investigations, construction field reviews, on-site testing (windows, air-tightness, materials tests, etc.), and similar activities in support of diagnostics and remediation of existing buildings and development of new construction. as well as maintaining effective key customer relationships.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in performing condition assessments of multi-residential, commercial and institutional facilities and preparation of reports and reserve fund studies
  • Perform field investigation work and the diagnosis of building problems required to design exterior envelope remediation including exterior wall, fenestration, roof and/or structural remediation
  • Assist in performing leak investigations of all aspects of building envelope; roofs, walls, windows and foundations
  • Assist in carrying out field review of construction work in progress on both new and restoration projects and report on progress and the contractors adherence to contract documentation
  • Assist with quality observation of work in progress to ensure compliance with tender documents and applicable codes and standards
  • Various site tasks which may include: measuring, drawing, core-cuts, identifying deficiencies, photography and clean-up, etc.
  • Performing site evaluations, inspections and testing as required to produce condition analysis reports
  • Prepare roof condition or building envelope assessment reports
  • Provide technical assistance to other field technicians and technologists
  • Compile data and photos and assemble into reports
  • Assist in the preparation of Request for Proposals (RFPs) as required
  • Other assigned duties as required

Requirements & Qualifications

  • 3-5 years’ experience in building science
  • Completion of a degree in an engineering or technology program with a focus on Building Science, Civil and / or Structural Engineering
  • Knowledge of building materials and construction processes for repairing building envelopes, cladding systems, roofs, and parking structures
  • Basic appreciation of building construction including methods, materials and systems
  • Exceptional attention to detail, specifically in accuracy of calculations and completeness of data collection and notation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to travel as necessary to perform required duties
  • Experience in Consulting Engineering or a related field is an asset
