The South Sector Genetics & Genomics (G&G) team in Calgary has an exciting opportunity for a Data Scientist position. G&G, as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL), provides complex genetic testing for a broad range of inherited conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic services for the province of Alberta. As a Data Scientist, you will work as part of a collaborative laboratory team comprised of laboratory geneticists, management, laboratory scientists/technologists, and other laboratory staff to analyze workflow and computational problems, recommend technology-based solutions, and determine, develop, implement, and maintain computational strategies to enhance delivery of Genetics & Genomics services. You will also provide data integration among systems (LIS, instruments, software, data storage) and support for commercial software within all areas of Genetics & Genomics.
As a Laboratory Scientist II, you will be responsible for participation in the initiation of new approaches to testing, researching the viability of given projects, facilitating methodology development and conducting advanced or complex patient tests. In addition, you will be involved in the implementation of new technologies and instrumentation and develop training procedures for new or revised programs, technology or instrumentation.

Completion of a Master of Medical Laboratory Science degree or a related scientific discipline.
Additional Required Qualifications:
MSc in Computer Science or Bioinformatics. Advanced programming skills in at least one programming language as well as extensive experience with running and modifying different software from distinct programming languages. Experience with compiled languages like C/C++, Nim or Rust. Experience with non-compiled languages such as Perl or Python. Experience with statistical packages in R, Julia and similar (development, running, module install, etc.). Experience with large dataset manipulation with proven software and libraries (pandas, scikit-learn, etc.). Experience with database development in SQL, NoSql (document-based storage) and graph databases, including PostgreSQL, MySql, CouchDB, Redis, Neo4J, among others. Experience with web servers such as Apache HTTPD, Nginx, uwsgi, and others. Proficiency in Linux (Red Hat, Debian and other common distributions). Proven experience with data integration. Excellent problem recognition and problem-solving skills. Effective organizational, time management and prioritization skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
