Columbia International School is looking for a Full-Time Cook

We are currently hiring for full time Cook for our Student Residence location. This position will help the team in preparing and cooking a variety of food options to our guests on a daily basis. This position requires a positive, ‘can do’ attitude and the ability to work in a fast paced, physically demanding environment.

The successful candidate must be available for shifts between the hours of 6:00am - 11:00pm. Our location is open 7 days a week so the candidate must be available any day of the week.

Duties Include:
  • Prepare soups/stocks/sauces
  • Preparation of both hot and cold food
  • Carry out all duties required to maintain meal services (Breakfast, lunch and dinner) (prepping and batch cooking)
  • Able to cook and prepare for breakfast, lunch or dinner with minimal guidance from the Executive Chef.
  • Prepare items for next day’s meal services
  • Recipe Adherence
  • Menu Development, Menu cycle adherence
  • Comprehensive knowledge of HACCP and the 7 steps of the flow of food, appropriate record keeping at Critical Control Points
  • Specific Knowledge of internal cooking temperatures and ability to ensure potentially hazardous foods are cooked from a raw state to a cooked stated to the appropriate temperature of specific food item
  • Knowledge of safe operation of specific equipment such as but not limited to; deep fryers, grill, char-broiler, Rational Oven, Convection Oven, Tilt Skillet, Steam kettles, Buffalo chopper, Proofer, Speed oven, Salamadaire, Food Processor
  • Assist with any reasonable task as assigned by a supervisor
  • All other duties assigned by management
  • Prepare items for salad bar
  • Prepare compound salads
  • Help with all food prep including but not limited to webtrition, menutainment, trattoria, and grill
  • Cover meal services in case cook and cook 1 are not present (Fill in)
  • Ensuring equipment is being cleaned regularly as per cleaning schedule
  • Responsible for meal services and overall hot food service
  • Ordering produce and preparing lists of what needs to be ordered for the menu
  • Assist with any reasonable task as assigned by a supervisor
  • All other duties assigned by management

  • To wear a clean, pressed and correctly worn uniform including name badge everyday
  • To wear all appropriate and company regulated PPE’s, including but not limited to non-slip shoes and cut resistant glove/s
  • Follow all Quality Assurance Guidelines for personal cleanliness and hygiene
  • Follow all Quality Assurance Guidelines for workplace cleanliness

  • Follow all guidelines for food preparation; recipe adherence; brand standard adherence
  • To receive stock, store and check for quality and quantity; ensuring that all stock is dated and rotated
  • To prepare all necessary food items in a timely manner
  • Able to clear a criminal records check
  • Detail oriented; strong organizational skills
  • Able to work weekend shifts
  • Ability to work in an environment that encourages and fosters teamwork, participation, creativity, openness, honesty and mutual respect
. Any other duties as required: Ensure work station/s are kept clean, washed and sanitized. Ensure all necessary equipment used in the preparation for and service of customers is kept clean, washed and sanitized.

Additional Information

Ontario Secondary School diploma or equivalent.
Provincial Certificate of Qualification (Red Seal)– Cook certification preferred
5 years’ of current, practical cooking experience required (experience may include 3 years’ apprenticeship experience)
Food Handlers certification required
Strong knowledge of HACCP and Food Safety Standards
Adhere to Compass quality assurance program
Ability to work independently and complete tasks in a timely manor
Ability to read, understand and execute standardized recipes
Ability to stand, walk, and bend without restrictions
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to organize work effectively and work in a fast paced environment
Ability to problem solve with minimal supervision
Ability to work in a team environment
Positive Attendance and Discipline free record required
Responsible for maintaining established standards for food preparation, cooking and execution of Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner for school residents
Other related duties as assigned.
Willing and able to work Shift Work including evenings, weekends and holidays.
Willing and able to work overtime.
Conditions of employment

Willing and able to wear and/or utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in compliance with safety regulations
Some positions may require to work shift work including evening, weekend and holidays.
Prepare fresh ingredients for cooking according to recipes/menu
Cook food and prepare top-quality menu items in a timely manner
Test foods using compass standards to ensure proper preparation and temperature
Operate kitchen equipment safely and responsibly
Ensure the proper sanitation and cleanliness of surfaces and storage containers
