The Communications Branch is responsible for developing and managing all aspects of internal and external communications strategies to educate and inform the public and staff regarding the delivery of affordable housing programs by the government. This is achieved through a broad range of activities related to media relations, issues management, social media, employee communications, and government, stakeholder and community relations.

As Senior Communications Specialist, Riverview, you’ll be the communications lead for the strategically important Riverview Lands, a BC Housing-owned site with a complex history that will be undergoing redevelopment. In this new role, you will liaise with the Riverview Lands team and serve as the subject matter lead for a range of important communications and stakeholder engagement initiatives crucial to the visioning and redevelopment process. If you are an experienced communications or public relations generalist looking to build your skills, this could be your chance to help deliver important change through a dedicated role with a complex project.

Reporting to the Manager, Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships and with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Director, Riverview Lands Development, you will develop and implement integrated communications and stakeholder engagement plans. In this role, you will have the opportunity to author a wide range of materials, help organize events and announcements, facilitate relationships with key stakeholders, create content for digital and social channels, respond to inquiries from the public and stakeholders, and manage media relations.

The successful candidate will have the following:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree or advanced diploma in communications or other relevant discipline.
Minimum of four years progressive related experience in communications in the areas of communications planning, issues management, and media relations.
Prior experience in the public sector and/or non-profit community groups working with diverse communities and an understanding of municipal development processes.

Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable to the employer.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
In-depth knowledge and understanding of communications, specifically in the public sector environment
Some knowledge and understanding of housing development and/or housing sector is an asset
Proficient in the use of MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)
Strong event management skills
Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills
Strong interpersonal, organizational and time-management skills
Ability to work with a wide variety of online social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc.)
Ability to write, prepare and post content to websites for both internal and external audiences
Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information in an appropriate manner while displaying a high degree of judgement, discretion, and decision-making ability
Ability to develop and implement communication strategies
Ability to work independently and in a team to analyze, problem-solve, mediate and mitigate difficult situations
Ability to build effective working relationships and work with external partners such as agencies and contractors
Ability to work under tight deadlines and pressures, with scrupulous attention to details
Ability to travel on Commission business and work evenings and weekends as required
Valid BC Driver’s License and must meet requirements to qualify for rental car insurance
