Temporary Sessional Replacement Counsellor Position (June 3, 2019 to May 1, 2020)

Conestoga College is looking for collaborative professionals to join our interdisciplinary Student Success Services team in supporting Conestoga students facing barriers to academic and personal success. The incumbent will provide short-term therapeutic counselling from a strengths perspective to promote student well-being. The incumbent enhances conditions for success at college by supporting students to clearly define their goals, further develop their skills, and establish connections with supports on-campus and in the community.

As a member of the Student Success Services team, the Counsellor assists with quality improvement and program initiatives intended to enhance care for our diverse population of students at Conestoga.

Provide brief, short-term, individual counselling
Assist students and potential students to function effectively as learners and as individuals by helping them understand, prevent or overcome personal, social, or educational problems that may hinder learning or their ability to cope with everyday living
Assess for safety risk and develop individualized safety plans accordingly
Refer students as appropriate to proper professional help
Facilitate discussion/dialogue between students, faculty, and administration
Facilitate therapeutic workshops and/or group counselling sessions
Assist administration, faculty, and support staff in a consultative role in identifying and dealing with student problems, and relationship problems among students
Participate in the orientation of new students to the College
May be asked to contribute to other areas ancillary to the Counsellor's role, such as student recruitment and selection, student employment, liaison with community service programs and agencies, professional development, and control of supplies and equipment

MSW (RSW), or Master’s degree in related field
Registered member of professional regulatory body (e.g. Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario)
Minimum two years of experience in the field of counselling
Fluency in Punjabi, Urdu, and Hindi preferred
Familiarity with Arabic and/or Farsi an asset
Strong assessment skills and experience in working with clients with mental health issues
Demonstrated experience with short term, single session counselling interventions and crisis intervention
Experience working with a diversified client base; demonstrated competency in addressing issues of sexuality, disability, gender, ethnicity, class, and religion
Experience planning and delivering psycho-educational groups and workshops; strong facilitation skills
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team within a client-centred environment
Excellent interpersonal skills; written and verbal communication skills
Maintains professional documentation of all activities according to recognized professional standards and Conestoga College policies
Knowledge of relevant community services and mental health resources in the community
Highly computer literate with strong Microsoft Office Suite experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote)
Flexibility in work hours; must be available to work 1 evening per week
