Robertson Building Systems is a leading manufacturer of Steel Building Systems in Canada.

Our Ancaster office is currently looking for an energetic and technically strong candidate for the role of Engineer - Intermediate with 5 years’ experience in the field of Structural Engineering with a focus on steel design.


The Engineer – Intermediate will report to the Manager, Engineering & Drafting Services. This position is responsible for the correctness, accuracy and structural integrity of all Robertson Buildings, while maintaining a cost effective use of materials.

The successful candidate for this position must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-demand environment with focus on collaboration and team work between departments to ensure the flow of work is processed in a timely, accurate, and cost-effective manner.


  • Technical engineering design and detailing processes as they relate to the design and manufacturing of steel building systems according to applicable codes and standards
  • Review released projects to improve internal processes, quality and or project cost
  • Review plans and specifications to prepare structural designs of moderate to higher complexity, using leading edge proprietary software and third party software that meet customer specifications, code requirements, manufacturing restraints and system deadlines
  • Maintain building strength and serviceability as prescribed by the Codes, along with thorough design documentation and most economical solutions according to corporate guidelines
  • Interact with Builder Services, Drafting teams and District Managers (if needed) to coordinate smooth project delivery
  • Review work performed by Engineers-In-Training (EITs) and other Engineers as required
  • Review, authorize and seal work performed by EITs and other Engineers not licensed in the appropriate province
  • Consult with other Engineers and EITs and other Engineers not licensed in the appropriate province
  • Consult with other Engineers and EITs to solve non-standard engineering issues
  • Work with reference sources, including corporate engineering web-site, electronic library and Internet, to obtain information
  • Work with technical standards and details related to steel building systems engineering practices, ensuring best practices for project delivery and growth in the marketplace
  • Assist internal and external customers, including architects and engineers, with relevant design information via written and verbal communications
  • Some travel time required

  • A bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Currently holds a professional engineering designation and be a member in good standing from at least one Canadian jurisdiction and be eligible for licensure in other provinces
  • 1 plus years of engineering design experience in steel building systems and/or structural steel design with experience in
  • Steel manufacturing experience is an asset
  • Extensive knowledge of the National Building Code of Canada as well as local provincial building codes
  • Some knowledge and familiarity of the U.S. Building Code would be considered an asset
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and STAAD.
  • Knowledge of TEKLA, MATHCAD and other 3D Design programs an asset
  • Excellent English written/oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Project management skills essential
  • Critical Thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems is essential
