Job description:

The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Corporate Human Resource function and Oshawa site HR function. The HR Generalist administers the corporate human resources policies, procedures, and programs. This includes benefit contracts, Pension and RRSP programs and non work related absence and disability management. In addition, responsibilities will include application of the same for the Oshawa site.

The HR Generalist carries out responsibilities such as maintaining up to date employee records in the HR systems, assisting managers, supervisors and site HR generalists with employee relations issues, assisting with recruiting for corporate positions, and benefit administration.
Dual Reporting to the Site Operations Manager and the President, the successful Human Resources Generalist will have the ability to interpret and apply Human Resources legislation and collective agreements in the workplace. The HR Generalist should have exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to adapt their communication style to different situations and people. It is crucial that the person in this position be able to work with sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion and care for the privacy and confidentiality of employees.
Job duties

Oshawa sites

  • Act as the first point of contact at the Oshawa site for all HR matters
  • Responsible for day to day HR transactions for the Oshawa site, including meeting with employees regarding absenteeism and discipline as needed
  • Be trained and remain current in the corporate payroll system
  • Assist with recruitment needs


  • Act as the first point of contact for site HR and Site Management on most HR Issues
  • Administration of the Pension/RRSP and benefits program and policies **
  • Manage and track employee leaves, including medical leaves and LTD/STD file **
  • Advise and assist with absence management and discipline processes **
  • Assist with Salaried/Corporate recruitment and employee onboarding
  • Prepare offer letters and employment letters on request
  • Recommend changes and updates to policies and procedures as needed
  • Advise site staff on everyday employee issues, including company policy interpretation, basic workplace legislation and benefit administration issues
  • Advise and coach managers on employee matters including harassment and termination issues under the direction of the President
  • Respond to government and labour agency requests for employee information
  • Respond to Ministry of labour complaints and notices
  • Advise or execute investigations into workplace harassment, violence and discrimination under the direction of the President
  • Employee maintenance in SuccessFactors HCM (HR Information system)
  • Maintain competency in the payroll system

3 - 5 years experience Generalist experience in HR, University degree or HR diploma

Experience in a unionized environment*

  • Working knowledge of employment legislation, with proven ability to interpret and apply legislation in the workplace
  • Ability to use and navigate Human Capital Management Systems/Human Resources Information Systems, preferably Success Factors
  • Claims management experience - medical leave, short and long term disability, RTW processes and workplace accommodation.
  • Benefits program administration
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work autonomously
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills with the ability to respond to changing priorities
  • Exceptional English verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent Presentation skills
  • Ability to be discreet and handle confidential information with sensitivity and security

Salary: $45,000.00 to $62,000.00 /year
