You will be the superintendent for a multi-million dollar sub-project, working closing with your general superintendent for the overall project, to deliver aggressively scheduled earthworks and soil remediation using some of the newest and best technology in Canada. The Site Superintendent is responsible for the field level execution of projects, including but not limited to supervising all on-site activities, managing field operations staff, overseeing sub-contractors, and making critical decisions on equipment, sequences and staging. You will be required to supervise multiple sites simultaneously as you:
Mentor foremen and crew leads as to day-to-day responsibilities and operating procedures
Supervise all activities on your job sites and/or job site areas, including Health and Safety, production and efficiency
Effectively manage site staff within a union or non-unionized environment to ensure safe completion of project, on schedule and on budget.
Work effectively with union staff and union representatives
Coordinate with other contractors
Work cross-functionally by utilizing internal business partners, systems, processes and operations
Develop safe and effective work plans and conveys them to crews in a clear fashion
Keep careful, accurate, timely records
Receive direction from General Superintendent
Give clear direction to all of your crews
Be accountable for assigned project deliverable and adherence to operations process and procedures
Hold your team members accountable for their own performance
Superintendents are the QM lead role for on-site operations: as such that they are responsible for executing all facets of their work plan safely and efficiently.
Health and Safety
Must gain and maintain full understanding and working knowledge of the QM’s Health, Safety and Environmental Policies and Procedures, ensuring all site personnel adhere to them at all times
Be aware and willing to ensure safety compliance by all personnel on site
Document and Notify the General Superintendent of any unsafe or potentially hazardous situations on site
Ensure the appropriate safety equipment is available and worn/used by site personnel at all times
Ensure all unsafe work is refused
Mentor and encourage all staff to identify hazards and sensible hazard mitigation measures
Quickly identify mitigate hazards
Manage field health and safety incidents, including accident investigations and follow-up
Gain and maintain an understanding of the relevant project specifications, drawings and contract obligations
Assist project engineers and project coordinators in the development of submittals and reporting.
Develop/contribute to daily operational and project plans, and participate in deliverable-level planning with General Superintendent or Project Manager
Hold effective job kick off meetings, daily tailgate meetings and weekly safety meetings
Coordinate manpower and equipment to minimize downtime
Establish rates in conjunction with PM and General Superintendent to source competitive bids and materials
Provide prompt and accurate daily recording of site activities to Project Administrator, Project Manager and General Superintendent so earned values can be forwarded to client
Cooperate with client on site visits and inspections
Act as a liaison identifying issues, scope conflicts and project changes
Establish site control, including preparation of safe zones, lay down areas, stockpile areas, hot zones, decontamination areas, erosion and sediment control measures, dust control and odour control
Coordinate the physical activities of employees, subcontractors, and suppliers for all site activities
Perform regular physical job site walkthroughs to observe safety and quality
Ensure all staff maintain focus and adhere to the schedule & design while keeping safety a priority
Ensure all site resources (labor, machinery, materials, sub-contractors) are effectively utilized and monitored in order to achieve timely completion of projects
Ensure condition of all equipment and supplies is fully documented by staff before acceptance on arrival and also before departure from site
Ensure condition of all shared areas, access ways, access paths, easements and structures to be protected/to remain, is fully documented by staff before QM begins applicable work and when QM demobilizes
Ensure all tools and equipment used onsite are taken care of and put away. Report damage or defects to the General Superintendent
Quickly identify changes in scope, conflicts with other contractors, and changes in ground conditions; immediately identify these issues to the Project Manager and General Superintendent with recommendations for solutions.
On an ongoing basis, monitor all works against specifications to ensure the continuing quality and accuracy of work performed
Identify, develop a plan, and correct any defects, mistakes, errors, contamination or variations.
Ensure all the applicable quality checklists are properly completed
Ensure that relevant information is communicated to direct reports/sub-contractors enabling them to effectively carry out their functions
Be willing to receive specialized training in order to accomplish skilled tasks
Ensure that all employs have, or receive the proper training for their assigned tasks
As required – QM Site Superintendents are the backbone of our organization. You will be absolutely key to delivering some of Canada’s most challenging projects, sometimes involving very unique scopes in difficult or remote locations.
Grade 12, GED, or equivalent work experience
Post-secondary education in related field is an asset – but proven experience and attitude is more important
Valid driver’s license mandatory, commercial preferred
Previous training in First Aid, H2S, respiratory protection programs, hazard identification and control, incident management, incident investigation, and protective equipment, is considered an asset but internal training and orientation will be provided as required.
Specialized training, for example, fall protection, confined space entry, rigging, pipe fusing, etc., is an asset but will be provided as required.
7+ years of supervisory experience in remediation, heavy civil and/or landfill construction
Experience as a mechanic, grade setter or Heavy Equipment Operator is an asset
Applicable safety and employment regulations, policies and procedures
Understanding and capability with respect to Behavioural Based Safety (BBS), Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Field Level Hazard Analysis (FLHA)
Good understanding of equipment selection, maintenance and crewing
Good understanding of sloping, shoring, dewatering, haul road maintenance, excavation, backfill, compaction and geosynthetics
Knowledge of quality standards
Computer literate, and capable of using Microsoft Excel
Knowledge of specifications and blueprints
Capable of managing required paperwork
Analytical, deductive and decisive
Leads by example and by modelling desired behavior, especially with regard to safety and hazard analysis/mitigation
Ability to delegate and supervise the work of others
Communicates effectively with others and maintains favorable employee and client relations
Ability to determine, by inspection, that specification and requirements are met
Ability to conduct group meetings and reconcile conflicting views
Ability to motivate workers as needed
Ability to understand and efficiently carry out instructions
Ability to communicate and coordinate with clients, project managers, subordinates, professionals, subcontractors and suppliers
Ability to adapt to quickly to change
Majority of time will be spent on job sites
Travel will be required
Use of specialized PPE, including half or full-faced respirator, may be required (training provided)
Work is outdoors and exposed to weather (dress appropriately)
Hours can be long, between 10 – 12 hours per day based on project and client requirements
