Wood’s Homes is a multi-service, nationally accredited non-profit children’s mental health centre based in Calgary. Today we have over 500 employees and provide more than 40 programs for 28,000 children and their families each year in Calgary, Lethbridge, Strathmore, and Fort McMurray.

Commitment to high-risk adolescents, challenged with some very tough issues, is not easy. These are the times when our frontline workers spring into action. The type of work we do requires quick thinking, confidence, forgiveness and persistence.

We are currently seeking a full-time Family Support Counsellor I or II for our Emergency Room Outreach (ERO) program. This program provides short-term in home support for children and youth (5-17) and their families with complex mental health needs. Referrals come directly from the emergency room at the Alberta Children’s Hospital for families that present to the emergency room with a mental health disruption.

As a key member of the team, the Family Support Counsellor is responsible for working collaboratively with the Psychiatric Emergency Team and the family members. This role would include providing follow up services in the home based on emergency room assessment recommendations. This role will be representing Wood’s Homes to community professionals, the public, and to individuals and families. The successful candidates will have flexible availability to work evening and weekend shifts.

This position reports to the Team Leader of the Emergency Room Outreach Program.

RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

  • In collaboration with the emergency department, conducting needs assessment to identify individual, social, emotional, behavioral and academic requirements of the child and family.
  • Developing treatment goals and case management strategies, in conjunction with emergency team assessment recommendations
  • Liaising between the family, school, community and other professional groups and service providers.
  • Advocates for the family and supports the development of a network of resources with the family, community and other professionals. Teaches families how to advocate for themselves.
  • Providing training and counseling to children and families to address issues affecting the child’s social/emotional/behavioral/academic progress.
  • Participates in weekly supervision, case reviews, clinical rounds and team meetings to ensure effective delivery of Family Support services.


  • Undergraduate degree in one of the Human Sciences, Child Care or related field.
  • Two to four years’ experience working with adolescents and families.
  • In-home support experience preferred.
  • Must have own transportation.
  • Personal suitability is an important consideration.
