Employment Dates: April 1, 2019 - November 30, 2019

Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours/week, including some weekend work

Pay Rate: $15-17/hour based, on experience and work performance

Job Responsibilities & Objectives

Andrews’ Farm Sustainability Intern will lead a whole-farm sustainability assessment and create an action plan to lower our farm’s environmental footprint from field to fork. Primary intern responsibilities include:

  • Conducting audits of energy, water, fuel and chemical use, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste, as well as assessing employee and visitor behaviour through a sustainability lens; and
  • Making recommendations for adopting new technologies and best management practices, implementing new targets and protocols for energy and water conservation, enhanced staff training, and education of the public about our farm’s sustainability objectives.

The work of this intern will lay the groundwork for improvements that allows our farm to become a more visible environmental leader in our community. As we implement changes to enhance our environmental performance, we will actively promote sustainability initiatives on our website and social media, in our educational farm tour programs and new on-farm signage, to inspire others to join us in taking actions to further environmental sustainability - visitors, staff, suppliers and other farms, locally and in the broader agricultural sector.

  • Farming – planning and hands-on growing of fruit and vegetable crops
  • Researching, planning and implementing improvements to soil health and water conservation practices, use of cover crops, irrigation systems, green energy generation
  • Introducing new vegetable crops, managing new crop trial plots, testing organic farming methods
  • Establishing a new vegetable teaching garden and composting program
  • Outdoor environmental and farm education programming
  • Planning farm festivals and events
  • Producing wine and hard cider
  • Retail sales and customer service at farmers markets, farm store, wine store
  • Marketing – social media, website, membership engagement

Eligibility Criteria

This internship is supported by Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada’s Career Focus Program. To be eligible for this role at Andrews Scenic Acres, you must:

  • Be 30 years or younger as of April 1, 2019
  • Be currently unemployed or underemployed
  • Have graduated from a university, college, DEP or CEGEP
  • Have not participated in the Agricultural Youth Green Job's Initiative and/or Career Focus Program before
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

Other Job Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent customer service skills - friendly, approachable and welcoming
  • Strong organization and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Comfortable working in both an outdoor environment and indoors at a desk
  • Proficient with MS Office applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook

The following are also assets:

  • Familiarity with Ontario agriculture, local food and farming
  • Interest in an agriculture-related career
  • Research and analysis skills

About Us

Since 1980, Andrews Scenic Acres Farm has grown to become one of the most diversified and well-known agri-tourism destinations in Ontario. We grow more than 20 different crops and invite the public to visit our farm to pick-their-own fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, pumpkins, sweet corn, flowers and more. We also attend several farmers markets, have an on-farm store and winery, and run educational farm tours and events from May-October each year. We have a staff team of 50 – we take pride in producing good food for our community and have a lot of fun working together to make it all happen!

Salary: $15.00 to $17.00 /hour
