AEP is currently looking for a full-time, permanent, Designer to support operations in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Reporting to the Operations Manager, our ideal candidate will be flexible, adaptable, detail-oriented and motivated, with a focus on providing a high degree of external and internal customer service as we grow our team and business!
Our Designer will be accountable for producing floor and roof truss plans, layouts, truss design drawings, wall panel, engineered wood product, and truss quotes and will be based out of Nanaimo, BC. Duties include, but are not limited to: determining design specifications based on blueprints, structural designs needs, and client requests; communicating with sales and production staff; and designing plans that equally balance aesthetic, effectiveness, and minimal waste.
Produce floor and roof truss plans, layouts, truss design drawings, and truss quotes using your ability to understand blueprints and customer requirements for specific projects;
Determine design specification based on blueprints and structural design needs;
Communicate with sales staff and customers on any technical aspects of plans which require clarification;
Consult with more experienced colleagues and management when more in-depth analysis is required;
Consistently deliver high quality, cost effective designs to both our internal and external customers by leading and directing efforts to value engineering roof and floor systems;
Optimizing designs for the greatest effectiveness and ensuring minimal waste;
Review project design and drive accurate releases to production and logistics.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCES:
High school diploma or equivalent;
Expert blueprint reading skills (architecture, structural and mechanical);
Experience and knowledge of rough framing and the construction process;
Command of local and national building codes, structural analysis, and structural engineering;
Ability to communicate and enforce adherence to local and national building codes and structural engineering;
Expertise in the application of building components, floor (I-Joist and LVL) and roof (truss) systems, wall panels, and other Engineered Wood Products;
Expert skills to design floor and roof trusses, wall panels, I-Joist, LVL and beams;
Ability to provide technical direction for the development of placement plans and quality control procedures;
Familiarity with product costing;
Superior knowledge of design computer software (eg: Mitek);
Strong Microsoft Office skills including Word and Excel;
Ability to set realistic objectives;
Ability to learn, adopt, and apply new technologies, practices and solutions in an effective manner;
Ability to acquire and retain knowledge and understanding through study, instruction, and/or experience;
Ability to demonstrate effective interpersonal and leadership skills;
Strong problem solving skills to resolve incomplete, ambiguous project requirements, errors or omissions within blueprints;
Fluency in English in written, reading, and oral communication (speed, accuracy, and proper expression);
Strong written and verbal communication skills needed to work effectively with other staff and suppliers;
Experience with growing companies supporting builders, construction, or multi-site manufacturing organizations would be an asset.
