Position: Night Residential-Part Time/Overnight Asleep

Organization: WAYS Mental Health Support

Status: Part-Time (24 hours per week, up to 40 hours per week)

Wage Rate: $17.55 / hour (start)

WAYS Mental Health Support is an accredited children’s mental health centre that supports children, youth and their families throughout Southwestern Ontario. Since 1969, over 5,000 youth have lived in our group homes and thousands more have benefited from a variety of community programs.

As a Night Residential Counsellor - Part Time/Overnight Asleep you will be helping to ensure a safe and comforting environment for our youth. Position Details:

  • Staff in this position supplement the services of our Night Residential – Full Time staff providing coverage for our residences during overnight hours (generally from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am).
  • Staff in this combined/dual position, work a combination of awake and asleep shifts over a fixed rotation.
  • The number of awake and asleep shifts vary from site to site (a typical rotation is 2 Awake shifts and 5 Asleep shifts over a 2 week period).
  • Overnight Asleep staff are assumed to be awake for 2 of the 8 hour shift on average. Due to resident issues or staffing issues, the overnight asleep staff may be required to remain awake for most or the entire shift and will be compensated accordingly.

In the position of Night Residential – Part Time (Awake Shifts) you would be responsible for the following:

  • Ensuring that the clients within the residence are appropriately supervised and cared for during the night shifts and that the residential milieu is safe and secure.
  • Making visual checks on residents to ensure the safety of the residents.
  • Providing each resident with appropriate and necessary physical care.
  • Acting as a positive role model.
  • Performing housekeeping and food preparation duties.
  • Ensuring completion of shift routines, preparing reports, completing inventories and conducting file audits as required.
  • On occasion, may be responsible for duties related to emergency admissions.

In the position Overnight Asleep role you would be responsible for the following:

  • Ensuring that the clients within the residence are appropriately supervised and cared for during the night shifts and that the residential milieu is safe and secure.
  • Assisting the Night Residential staff in settling any residents for the night.
  • Providing support to the staff if resident issues arise during the overnight hours.
  • Assisting with morning routines, as required.

The successful candidate will meet the following:

  • Must possess a Community College Diploma in child and youth care or equivalent specialization or a university degree in social science.
  • Must possess a valid class G or G2 Driver’s License.
  • Current in Red Cross First Aid and CPR and the Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behaviour (PMAB), or willingness to obtain these certifications.
  • Experience as a frontline worker in a residential setting would be preferred.
  • Ability to provide services in French is an asset.
