As a key member of the Finance executive team, the DCFO is responsible for effective and efficient financial management, reporting, and financial services delivery while supporting the CFO in aligning strategic and financial initiatives with patient and UHN priorities.

The DCFO plays a critical role in enabling UHN to meet its organizational goals by:

providing strategic leadership and oversight to ensure the delivery of finance operational excellence; the development of relevant financial information, financial planning, and reporting.
ensuring alignment with UHN’s mission, core values, and strategies; championing the financial and ethical integrity, serving as an effective leader for responsible change.
directly impacting the management and financial integrity of UHN through the effective stewarding of organizational resources, maintaining appropriate controls, and integrity of financial management in compliance with applicable legal, governmental and regulatory requirements.
establishing effective working relationships with hospital/medical staff, Unions, UHN foundations, Ministries, LHINs, financial peers in the sector.

Key Responsibilities

Contributes financial insight and analysis to strategic financial management at UHN that supports financial stability.
Provides overall leadership and direction to the Finance Corporate Services unit, develop a motivated, cohesive, and highly functioning team across Finance where staff from diverse multilingual and multicultural backgrounds can interact productively and efficiently.
Encourages a culture of service, innovation and problem-solving in support of UHN’s mission.
Responsible for the development, maintenance, and monitoring of appropriate financial management and internal control systems that assures integrity of data; sustains a culture of business fluency, fiscal accountability, and continuous improvement.
Promotes and facilitates opportunities for professional growth/development of staff.
Provides evaluation, analysis, and reporting of impact of long range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies, capital acquisition, technology investment, and regulatory action.
Monitors changing priorities, trends, legislative requirements and/or other internal/external emerging issues; analyzes the potential impact on goals, priorities and activities; recommends and/or implementing appropriate strategies to achieve desired results.
Monitors, reports, and interprets the performance of UHN business plan and budget by integrating financial and hospital data. Performs/participates in-depth analysis of results, trends, environmental factors, and benchmarking to recommend appropriate course of action to CFO and executive team.
Participates in quality, risk management activities to ensure quality processes are in place; collaborates with program/service leadership teams for tracking financial data.
Ensures timely and accurate financial and tax reporting in accordance with GAAP, PSAS, MIS guidelines with appropriate controls to ensure compliance with relevant local, provincial and federal acts, regulations, and legislation.
Ensures the annual external audit is completed in a timely and objective manner, including issuance of the annual financial statements.
Optimizes the use of hospital’s resources, ensures departments are administered in a fiscally responsible manner, which maximizes organizational capacity and optimizes the benefits to the hospital.
Oversees treasury and capitalization strategy; optimizes working capital by ensuring appropriate level of liquidity for operation and fund flow; contributes insights to investment opportunities and recommends optimal courses of action with full disclosure of associated risks.
Provides direction and oversight of an efficient process cycle and effective communication of budgeting including the development of planning assumptions and budget targets, forecasting, and interpretation of financial results cycle.
Leads multi-year complex financial and capital planning including the integration of financial, clinical and management data.
Actively engages the appropriate participation of management and staff in decision making, planning, and evaluation of hospital activities.

Desired Skills and Experience

Minimum Education

Master degree in related discipline or equivalent business experience
Chartered Professional Accountant CPA, CA required


A minimum of ten years of relevant experience including well-rounded experience in all aspects of Financial leadership in healthcare, or business sectors.
Previous experience in leading significant organizational change in a large de-centralized environment.
Proven success in leading transformational change through the development and implementation of a comprehensive Financial Management strategy — in complex, multiple stakeholder, professionally staffed, unionized organization.
Ability to work and thrive in a changing environment while experiencing financial constraints.
Demonstrated track record of achievement in team building, management development and creating and maintaining effective high performance teams.
Demonstrated experience in financial strategy, Treasury risk assessment, Financing and Investment Management.


Recognized as ethical and independent, demonstrating high standards of professionalism and respect for confidentiality
Exceptional communication skills both verbal and written with the ability to articulate complex financial issues to a broad and diverse audience.
Demonstrated comfort and presence with and presenting to senior management, Board Committees, and external agencies
A strong yet fair and disciplined leader
Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to identify trends, establish benchmarks and provide credible analysis and business recommendations
Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to create integrated plans, influence outcomes and engage multiple stakeholders
Knowledge of Healthcare sector and Broader Public Sector Procurement Directive an asset
Demonstrated excellent performance and attendance history
