The VSCAN is a highly competitive and specialized group of veterinarians and technicians concentrating on the diagnosis and treatment of companion animals with neurologic disorders using advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures. We are seeking an associate veterinarian with experience in Veterinary Neurology and Neurosurgery.

The position requires specialized knowledge of veterinary neurology, neurosurgery, neuroanatomy and clinical pathology, and the ability to supervise and educate junior veterinarians, veterinary technologists and other supporting staff. The successful candidate will be expected to consult, diagnose and treat companion animal neurologic conditions, and interpret MRI studies. Advanced training in clinical veterinary neurology and neurosurgery, in the form of an internship and/or clinical research, is required. Strong communication skills, advanced computer skills, the ability to be a self-starter, and attention to detail are also requirements. The duties of this job include routine and emergency after-hour consultation, diagnosis of neurological diseases and conditions, medical and surgical treatment of these animals

· Diagnosing diseases or abnormal conditions in the nervous system of small animals through physical examinations or laboratory tests

· Diagnose, and treat a wide range of conditions, from autoimmune, neurodegenerative, and neuromuscular diseases, to seizure disorders, movement disorders, and chronic pain syndromes

· Performing surgical procedures for a wide variety of conditions including: tumours of the brain and spine; Chiari-like malformation; hydrocephalus; trauma; spinal instability; intervertebral disc disease; nerve sheath tumour; neuromuscular disease; wobbler’s disease; fracture/luxation.

· Reviewing diagnostic imaging (MRI and CT and Digital Radiography) results

· Reviewing electrodiagnostic studies (BAER testing, Electromyography, Nerve Conduction Velocity and Electroencephalogram)

· Providing a range of veterinary services including seizure management, pain management, cerebrospinal fluid collection and analysis, Class IV Laser Therapy, Electrical Muscle Stimulation, Cytarabine Treatment, Epidural Injections, Anthrocentesis (joint tap), and blood work.

· Providing spinal cord decompression for intervertebral disc disease & cancer

· Consulting with general practitioners to diagnose and treat difficult neurology cases

· Vaccinating animals to prevent and treat diseases

· Performing routine and emergency examinations

· Advising clients on feeding, housing, behaviour, breeding, hygiene and general care of animals

  • Often required to lift and carry animals weighing up to 150 pounds
  • Supervise and educate junior veterinarians, animal health technologists and animal care workers
  • Conduct veterinary research related to clinical science and disease prevention and control
  • Emergency on-call work will be required.

Experience & Skills

· Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine

· 1+ Years working experience in veterinary referral center required

· Current or eligibility for veterinary licensure in Ontario required

· Advanced training in clinical veterinary neurology and neurosurgery, in the forms of specialty internship, residency and/or clinical research, is required

· Specialized knowledge of veterinary neurology, neurosurgery, neuroanatomy and clinical pathology

· Strong communication skills

· Advanced computer skills

· Ability to work alone and in a team

· Detail oriented.

· Ability to communicate in English (written and spoken)

· Experience in clinical teaching preferred but not required

· Familiarity with the veterinary journal publication process
