The Canadian Deafblind Assocation (CDBA) Ontario Chapter is a registered charity that provides services across the province to members of the deafblind community. We are committed to enhancing the lives of people who are deafblind (our consumers) through support, services, awareness, recognition and Intervenor Services. An Intervenor provides communication support and day to day living support to individuals who are deafblind so that they may live independently. As an Intervenor within our organization, you would share in our commitment to our consumers, working with a team of dedicated professionals and support the needs of individuals who are deafblind and their families.
The Intervenor is responsible for providing communication and information to the consumer in their preferred mode of communication. The Intervenor may perform a wide variety of tasks while on shift, including: supporting the consumer in their home and community environments; using appropriatre communication techniques to relay information; empowering the consumer to participate and be successful in all aspects of daily living including personal hygiene, meal preparation, house cleaning, volunteerism, etc; assisting with developing and supporting consumer goals and objectives; assisting with program development; ensureing documentation and records are complete; following procedures and protocols and ensuring the overall health and well-being of the consumer.
Education and Related Experience
Completion of a college diploma or certificate in the Intervenor for Deafblind Persons program, or: Developmental Services Worker (DSW); Social Services Worker (SSW); Community Services Worker (CSW); Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA); Personal Support Worker (PSW); or a related human services field
Experience working within social services or human services is beneficial
Experience supporting persons with developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors
Experience supporting persons with mental health conditions
Experience providing personal support activities including; full personal care support, assisting with personal care support, lifting and transferring; assisting with health/medical routines; using assistive devices and lifting systems, etc.
We are actively seeking individuals who have the ability to learn and understand different communication methods and learning styles
Good organizational skills and critical thinking abilities are essential in this role
Communication in American Sign Language (ASL) or Signed Exact English (SEE) is an asset
Communication in both official languages (English/French) is an asset
Employment as an Intervenor is conditional upon receipt of a successful Vulnerable Persons Police Clearance
This position requires a valid driver's license Class G, access to a reliable vehicle, a clean current drivers abstract and the ability to obtain automobile insurance with a minimum liability of two million dollars.
Working Environment and Physical Demands
This position involves working in a variety of settings i.e. supported independent living program, community environments
This position requires repetitive hand motion and good manual dexterity; moderate stooping, bending, and lifting. The incumbent must be able to lift 35lbs on an occasional basis. The position will be required to work indoors and outdoors
This position involves shift work. The shifts may be days, evenings, overnights and weekends on a pick up basis
