POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for designing new and innovative mechanical products for Automotive and Industrial customers. Works closely with other Product Design Engineers, Systems Engineers, Program Managers, Manufacturing Engineers, Quality Engineers, Purchasing, Sales and Customer Engineers to create the most efficient and lowest cost solution for our customers. Responsible for the engineering, testing and validation of new products that meet or exceed our customer’s expectations. Role requires strong engineering background in product design involving: die-casting, forging, injection molding, spring manufacture, cold heading, powder-metal, application of bearings and machining. Customer involvement includes technical discussions, design reviews and problem investigation. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1 25% Performs Product Design - create 3D models, 2D drawing. 2 20% Analytics - spring calculations, bushing and damping material PV, FEA, force balance, and free-body diagrams. 3 10% Customer technical presentations for new product design, explanation of Gates patented technologies, problem diagnosis and resolution. 4 20% Development of DVP&R and DFMEA for product testing, validation and risk mitigation. 5 10% Communication with supply base to ensure designed components are feasible to manufacture and lowest cost to meet the design requirement. 6 15% Support commercialization process through APQP, VA/VE (cost saving), training and production support.
May lead or coach junior engineers.

Bachelor of Science Degree or equivalent, preferably in Mechanical Engineering
Minimum 10 years of related experience within a design for manufacture discipline
Minimum 5 years of experience in Gates engineering
Subject Matter Expert (SME) for an aspect of Gates product design (component commodity, manufacturing process or specialty material).
Able to present technical information to customers and management.
May lead project teams and provide guidance and work direction to more junior engineers.
High level of creative and analytical thinking.
Decision making involves researching, analyzing and evaluating data and using judgement in applying professional expertise. Plans and conducts complex, mulita-faceted assignments; may require solid project management skills.
Identifies and communicates discovered issues and recommends and implements corrective actions from root cause analysis.
Ability to apply engineering principles, practices and procedures while performing calculations for mechanical design of automotive underhood products.
Communicates appropriate product technical details to Product Development Team (PDT).
Expert in CAD/CAE (Pro-E preferred, Catia, Unigraphics, Solidworks).
Knowledge on the effective use of DVP&R (validation) and DFMEA (risk management).
Knowledge on the application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Knowledge of all team member functions including: Systems Engineering, Sales, Program Management, Manufacturing, Quality and Purchasing.
Microsoft Office Suite of skills, including Microsoft Project.
Strong oral, written and presentation skills.
Strong organizational skills to handle multiple projects for multiple customers.
Able to understand customer needs and provide technical data, analysis and support.
Strong team player, proactively able to support other team members and share knowledge to allow cross training of key functions. Builds collaborative relationships.
