The Rockyview General Hospital opened its doors in 1966, originally as a medical and surgical hospital until 24-hour emergency services were added in 1971. In 1986, the Highwood Building opened and the original hospital building also began renovations. In 1997, a new hospital addition opened and was named the Holy Cross Ambulatory Care Centre. A major expansion to the Highwood Tower in 2008 opened up three additional levels in the building, including new administrative and education space on the 10th floor and four new medical and surgical units. The latest addition to the Rockyview General Hospital occurred in March 2010 with the opening of the Southern Alberta Institute of Urology (SAIU). The 40,000 square foot facility is the largest, most comprehensive urology centre in Canada with a multi-disciplined, patient-centered approach to urological care. In March 2010, the Rockyview also added a southern addition with a brand new, state-of-the-art Emergency department. This addition also includes shelled-in space for the future Cardiac Care Unit and Intensive Care Unit, along with other support facilities. Quick Facts: RGH has 650 beds. RGH has approximately 5000 staff, 2600 physicians/residents and 500 volunteers. RGH is located next to Carewest Glenmore Park (150 beds) and the Southern Alberta Institute of Urology (SAIU). RGH has a consistent compliance rate of over 70% for Hand Hygiene.
