We are looking for a compassionate front-line Support Worker, who will connect with The Mustard Seed’s guests and encourage them in their journey, referring them to programs and services that will support sustainable life changes.
This casual position will provide relief support in the following programs: the Food Program, Outreach Program, Supportive Living Program, Thrift Store and Reception. Reporting to the Basic Services Manager, the Support Worker is a front-line team member that responds to the needs of The Mustard Seed guests on an ongoing basis.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Communicate the story of The Mustard Seed’s ministry and maintain a high level of professionalism, respect and gratitude with all staff, donors, volunteers, community members and visitors
Ensure services are delivered in a respectful and safe environment while enforcing facilities rules, expected standards of conduct, and building cleanliness at all TMS facilities
Communicate issues and concerns to supervisors
Model healthy relationships with staff, donors, volunteers and community participants by listening, counseling, praying, and referring.
Brief, de-brief and pray with both staff and volunteer groups when necessary
Ensure daily tidiness and cleanliness of work area
Maintain specific records, stats and incident reports on log books and computer files and maintain proper radio communication at all TMS facilities
Participate in all staff trainings and attend monthly general meeting
Other duties and site related duties may be assigned when required
Ensure the security of the place, for the safety of all community members, staff, volunteers and visitors
Build healthy relationships with community participants who are accessing services by actively listening, providing resources and referrals, de-escalating conflict, maintaining healthy boundaries, and seeking opportunities for involvement and engagement
Work with community participants to encourage positive changes in lifestyle and behavior through positive day - to - day interactions
Monitor and ensure Mustard Seed’s best behavior practices are being followed. This may include refusing entrance to those whom are under the influence of drugs or alcohol and may express aggressive behavior.
Ensure the cleanliness and tidiness of the area
Perform bathroom and round checks, screen and ensure our best behavior practices are being followed.
Assist community participants to access The Mustard Seed services available in the Drop-In programs and activities
Facilitate activities in the day room
Support the daily operations of the specific program and in some cases while supervising volunteers
Maintain a high level of professionalism and gratitude with all donors and visitors
Facilitate and instruct meal groups on the safe handling and preparation of food for the evening meal program.
Understand and communicate the root causes of poverty and poverty alleviation to those helping in the kitchen while touring them through our facility communicating the services that we provide.
Receive, handle and track food donations
Maintain food areas’ cleanliness and kitchen safety to building code standards by scheduling routine and inspections and maintenance of equipment
Maintain specific records; like donations, volunteers, food services and incident reports on log books and computer files
Supportive Living Program
Ensure the safety and security of the housing environment.
Assist residents in meeting the obligations of residency
Encourage and motivate community participants to participate in activities and programs through building healthy relationships
Document community participants interactions, community participants referrals and community participants progress
Respond to crises in a professional, calm, and supportive manner
Support the dignity of participants by seeking to identify their needs in a respectful manner
Be a supportive and proactive teammate towards fellow staff and volunteers
Provide person-centered support and care to participants in a flexible way which meets their needs
Take initiative to assess situations and make appropriate decisions to support participants
Provide and maintain a safe, clean environment
Manage conflict and provide crisis intervention as required
Collect data and maintain accurate records, including incident reports
Make merchandising, pricing, and store layout decisions
Manage customer complaints and concerns
Greet customers, offer information, and provide assistance as needed
Restock inventory and create product displays
Assist with sales transactions
Clean and organize the store to ensure a welcoming environment to customers
Screening, redirecting and responding to phone calls in a professional manner
Processing mail and email correspondences
Drafting and preparing reports, correspondences and communications
Process all donations in a timely fashion
Record donor contact information in the appropriate software
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Experience working within the culture of the inner city and/or with the less fortunate is preferred
A demonstrated passion to be involved in ending homelessness is essential
Organizational skill and ability to carry all and delivery of front line programs
Bible school/college education is considered an asset.
Strong communication and conflict resolution skills
Proactive and self-starter individual
A team player, who works collaboratively and has a ‘teachable spirit’
Good written and verbal communication
Good knowledge of MS Word and Excel
Ability to work independently and in a cross-functional team
Integrity, discretion and tact dealing with confidential matters
Knowledge of mental illness and addictions is an asset
Current Standard First Aid certification is strongly desired
Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset
Experience working in a fast pace environment
This is a relief casual position and hours will vary from week to week
Days, evenings, weekends and overnight shifts are required and on short notice
No guaranteed minimum hours
$18.00/hr to start with a $3/hour night shift premium when applicable
The position will require ongoing compassionate care, frequent manual labor, and at times, conflict resolution and organizational ability while working directly with risk population in life recovery
This position is often fast-paced, and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve
Moderate periods of standing/walking and siting, at indoors and outdoors
Moderate physical effort

A clear Driver’s Abstract is required prior to offer of employment
Local travel to various Mustard Seed sites and external agencies will be required
This position requires varied mental and emotional effort, must be able to respond appropriately to intense situations, provide conflict resolution, work directly with clients at risk
