Reporting to the Dean, Applied Research & Innovation (ARI), the Strategic Communications and Innovation Manager will have overall responsibility for Humber’s local, regional, provincial and national applied research & innovation communications strategy and activities. The incumbent with develop and implement a multi-year communications strategy and plan that will build awareness, increase participation and advance a culture of innovation. A key responsibility will be to promote applied research to the internal community with an aim to celebrate the achievements of staff/faculty/students and partners and drive a culture of participation at the faculty level. The Manager will also lead the facilitation of a suite of specialized services to help internal and external clients drive growth and innovation, creating suitable innovation presentations and materials.
The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree in communications, public policy, public relations, marketing or business administration and a minimum of seven years practical experience in related communications and marketing activities – direct experience in post-secondary education preferred. MBA (or in progress) considered an asset, as is specific training and experience in change management, design thinking and innovation training (preferably from IDEO or a qualified partner).
In addition, the incumbent will have experience in:
developing and implementing strategic communications and marketing plans and products; supporting high-level post-secondary leadership, including creating key messaging; and business management and development, including budget planning and analysis as well as people management.
The successful candidate must understand and work with Applied Research; have demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior-level executives; highly developed ability to deliver meaningful presentations, especially at the Executive level; be a strategic thinker with ability to break down complex ideas and present them in compelling, relevant, engaging and meaningful ways that is clear and captivating to target audiences; and strong analytical abilities to identify audience motivations and interests and create effective and impactful messages and communication strategies.
A strong record of collaborations and partnerships should be demonstrated, as should excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and superior skills in applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and similar design and communications programs.
