Under the direction of the Senior Manager, Risk Methodology, Analytics & Reporting, this role is accountable for specialized credit risk analysis, risk rating systems and introducing new methodologies and statistical techniques to support credit risk management activities. The Manager provides advanced analytical expertise to support the development, validation, monitoring, reporting and documentation of, Stress testing, Basel risk rating systems and IFRS-9 models, credit risk scorecards and credit risk strategies. The role is also accountable for mentoring and teaching new techniques to all analysts within the group.
1. Credit Risk Management
Responsible for improvements to the production, organization, analysis and accuracy of BMO and/or U.S. portfolio monitoring reports and ad hoc reports, including both consumer and commercial portfolios
Responsible for improvements to the monitoring, analysis and reporting of credit portfolios including probability of default, loss given default, exposure at default, economic loss, delinquency rates, write-off rates, automated decisions, approval rates, and override rates
Responsible for the development, monitoring and enhancement of risk rating systems, credit risk scorecards and decision trees for BMO Canada and/or U.S. portfolios
Responsible for the development, monitoring and enhancement of Stress Testing and IFRS-9 models for BMO Canada and/or U.S. portfolios
Responsible for developing new analyses and making recommendations to improve risk rating systems, credit risk scorecards, stress testing and IFRS-9 models and credit decision trees
Responsible for detailed documentation corresponding to statistical analysis and results
Responsible for change management activities including the creation and management of change logs
Responsible for the development, timely delivery and monitoring of Capital at Risk plan information
Responsible for the production and development of reports in a more supervisory role, in most cases
Responsible for specialized analysis and developing creative statistical solutions to support Basel Accord deliverables, Stress Testing models, IFRS-9 models and sales/marketing initiatives on lending products
2. Specialized Model Development
Responsible for specialized support for the development, implementation and testing of risk rating systems, credit risk scorecards and decision trees for BMO Canada and U.S. credit portfolios
Responsible for specialized support for the development of predictive models and decision trees to predict PD, LGD and EAD for AIRB, Stress testing and IFRS-9 models.
Responsible for providing expertise to others involved in the development, documentation, and validation of models to support risk rating systems, credit risk scorecards and other analytical initiatives
Responsible for defining how risk rating systems, scorecard and decision tree performance will be monitored and analyzed
Responsible for the development, documentation and validation of risk rating systems, credit risk scorecards and other analytical models to support regulatory requirements, credit risk strategies, provisioning and loss estimation
3. Project Management and Mentoring
Responsible for providing analytical expertise on larger scale projects with the biggest strategic implications
Responsible for mentoring senior analysts, analysts and interns in order to deliver on projects
Responsible for leading larger scale and strategic projects
Responsible for designing, creating and managing detailed documentation and change logs for regulatory purposes
To deliver on these accountabilities, the incumbent must have the following authorities:
This role has the authority to access legacy system data on the mainframe and credit risk data in the Basel datamarts.
This role has the authority to access, read, manipulate and create datasets from third party files, which are loaded to the Basel datamarts
This role has the authority to access details of risk rating systems, credit risk scorecards and credit decision trees and strategies.
This role has the authority to provide information and make recommendations on proposed risk rating systems, credit risk scorecards and credit risk strategies.
This role has the authority to coordinate work and arrange meetings to discuss or resolve issues.
This role has the authority to assign work to analysts and interns within a project team.
This role has the authority to make recommendations on statistical techniques used by other analysts within the team.
This role requires the incumbent to interact with the following processes and/or groups:
Other members of the Risk department (BMO or Harris) for the purposes of providing information, reviewing strategies and making recommendations
The Financing Products department for the purposes of providing product knowledge, and making recommendations about credit strategies
Model Validation for the purposes of providing model documentation for validation and to comply with policies and standards
Cardholder Services for the purposes of providing information and reviewing credit strategies
Various capital teams for the purposes of providing and receiving information on capital impact of Basel parameters
Third party suppliers (e.g. FLinxs, Accepta, Equifax, etc.) for the purposes of receiving and understanding data
Third party suppliers (e.g. SAS, Angoss, etc.) for the purposes of using critical software for the role
Information Management department for the purposes of understanding data in the marts and being able to create and run reports
Risk Governance and Operations department for the purposes of supplying regulatory data
Customer Insights, Line of Business departments for the purposes of understanding various data
This role contributes to BMO Canada and U.S.’ overall business results but does not have specific direct financial measures associated with it.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Graduate University Degree in Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Operations Research or Business , or Undergraduate degree with comparable work experience
At least five years previous work experience in an analytical role using SAS or any other statistical/data mining software
Very strong analytical and technical skills required including quantitative analysis (strong time series analysis) , programming and statistical model development
Strong mainframe, UNIX and PC skills
Experience with statistical software packages, including SAS and KnowledgeStudio
Experience with manipulating data using Excel and SQL
Excellent knowledge of bank products and credit lending services
Knowledge of the Basel Capital Accord
Knowledge of Stress testing/IFRS-9 requirements
Excellent interpersonal, relationship building and communication skills
Excellent analytical and technical skills
Excellent writing skills
Excellent time management, planning and organizing skills to manage multiple priorities and deliver quickly under pressure
Strong leadership and mentoring skills
Strong project management and change management skills
This role requires minimal lifting and minimal exposure to risk to safety. The working environment requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk using a computer with a need for focus visual and mental concentration. During month/quarter-end periods and CaR planning, there is an inherent pressure to meet deadlines.
