LifeLabs is currently looking for a Pathology Assistant - Histology to join our team in Toronto, Ontario.

Job Purpose:
Under the technical supervision of a pathologist, lab manager, supervisor and administrative supervision of the supervisor, the pathologists' assistant assists the pathologist in the preparation of human surgical specimens. He or she also assists in examining and collecting tissues for various other needs including controls in the laboratory, and testing of new methodologies, and is responsible for maintaining records of tissue and other QA / QC parameters, in compliance with LifeLabs’ Policies and Procedures. Demonstrates LifeLabs Vision and Values in all activities.

Key Responsibilities:
Dictates gross description and complete dissection of surgical specimens (i.e. type, size, weight, color and anatomical characteristics) under the supervision of the pathologist or laboratory manager.
Selects and submits tissue sections for microscopic examination. Understands the appropriate sections necessary for staging tumors, margin evaluation, and lymph node evaluation. Understands the methodology of submitting tissue to obtain optimum slides. Follows protocol to ensure proper orientation of the specimen at embedding (labeling cassette, orienting tissue in cassette, use of ribbons).
Assists in collecting and submitting tissue for a variety of needs including controls, teaching, research, and others as the need arises. Maintains awareness of specimen containers and cassettes, including responsibility for following them through the decal process, and is responsible for the disposition of the specimen at all times.
Be an integral part of the pathology team and works closely with the lab manager, and Pathologists to provide a high standard of patient care by participating in huddles, team meetings and in services.
Develops, updates, and maintains procedure, safety manuals. Ensures that all appropriate procedures are followed in the surgical grossing area. Uses appropriate personal protective equipment and monitors work area for appropriate use of PPE by others.
Is able to perform all duties of the technical staff as needed including accessioning, grossing of small biopsies, printing of cassettes, specimen storage and discard.
Communicates effectively with histo technologists as necessary to ensure adequate embedding or sectioning of submitted microscopic sections, troubleshoot cassette errors (duplicates, missing blocks).

Minimum Education: University undergraduate degree. Minimum of a Baccalaureate degree; a Masters degree in Health Science is preferred. Completion of a recognized Pathology Assistants Training Program.
Professional Registration: Registered with CAP/AAPA.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years' recent experience as a Pathology Assistant dealing with surgical specimens is preferred.
Regular Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week for full time, between 20 to 37.5 hours per week for regular
Part-time, less than 20 hours per week for Occasional part-time & any hours for a limited period of time for temporary Part-time, worked during any shift for all of the above.
Working Environment: Laboratory environment. May handle biohazardous material and chemicals/reagents.
