The Organization

Since its inception in 1928, the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) has governed the Métis within Alberta. The MNA is led by a democratically elected Provincial Council, comprised of a Provincial President, a Vice-President, and six regional Presidents and Vice-Presidents. The Opportunity

Métis Crossing is the first major Métis cultural interpretive center in Alberta. Métis Crossing endeavours to preserve, strengthen, and promote the cultural heritage of Alberta's Metis people. Reflective of our communities and cultural landscapes, programming is based on research, collection, and presentation of Metis traditions, lifeways, and cultural artifacts. We strive to incorporate a continuum of Métis achievement, both historical and contemporary.

Métis Crossing seeks applicants for the position of “Line Cook” and “Prep Cook”. The successful applicants will be responsible for preparing and serving hot and cold menu items, have experience with a variety of food service equipment, and ensure precautions are taken to protect and ensure that safe work practices are adhered to.

Key Responsibilities – Line Cook

  • Set up and prepare station.
  • Cook and prepare using grills, griddles, deep fryers, ovens, stoves, and other kitchen equipment.
  • Plate and present menu items according to standards set out by the Chef.
  • Maintain and clean station, including restock items and ensuring stations are sanitary and safe.
  • General duties assigned by the Chef, such as cleaning kitchen equipment and organizing deliveries.
  • Assist with training of new cooks.
  • Use and wear equipment, devices, and clothing required by Métis Crossing and in compliance with OHS.
  • Report any issues or defective equipment.
  • Adhere to WHMIS at all times.

Key Responsibilities – Prep Cook

  • Prepare and weigh ingredients, including meats and vegetables (washing, peeling, and cutting).
  • Prepare ovens and stoves at appropriate temperatures.
  • Maintain and clean stations.
  • Proper storage of leftover food.
  • General duties assigned by the Head Chef, such as cleaning kitchen equipment and organizing deliveries.
  • Use and wear equipment, devices, and clothing required by Métis Crossing and in compliance with OHS.
  • Report any issues or defective equipment.
  • Adhere to WHMIS at all times.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with diverse audiences of varying cultural backgrounds and ages.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changes in schedule and assignments.
  • Attention to details.
  • Able to work both independently and with others in a team.
  • Ability to work in a noisy, fast paced, multitasking environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a physical demanding area, including standing for the duration of shifts.

Qualifications

  • 3 years’ ongoing experience in a Line Cook's position/1-3 years’ ongoing experience in a Prep Cook’s position with practical hands on knowledge and experience of foodservice operations, including broiler, fryer, hot and cold food preparation.
  • Experience working with various cooking equipment including but not limited to, broilers, fryers, hot and cold food preparation.
  • Food and beverage operational experience with a basic understanding of inventory control and food cost practices and procedures.
  • A Post Secondary education in a recognized Hospitality or Culinary Management program would be an asset.
  • WHMIS, basic First Aid, and Food Safe Certifications.
  • Knowledge and adherence to safe and sanitary food handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of Alberta history and cultural diversity.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Métis.

Other Requirements

  • Availability to work a mixed schedule of days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to work at Métis Crossing in Smoky Lake.
  • Must be returning to school full-time in the fall 2020.
  • Must provide Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check prior to hire.

Employment Details:

  • Schedule will be based on a 40 hour work week, and will include weekdays, weekends, and holiday.
