Position / Poste: Instructor (full-time, contract)

The Instructor will collaborate with the Lead Instructor to coordinate and deliver the Learning Independence for Future Empowerment (LIFE) program for March of Dimes Canada (MODC), assisting young adults with a range of physical and developmental disabilities make the transition to greater independence by providing new skills and hands-on opportunities for growth and development. The program provides participants with a learning environment to expand their social and professional skills while practicing the daily responsibilities of adulthood. Participants learn new skills through a combination of Life Skills Workshops, Conductive Education, Music Therapy, Transit Training, and Social & Recreational Outings. The Instructor will set appropriate group and individual goals for each program participant. The Instructor will assist with organizing/leading consultations and outreach visits/meetings and in all circumstances providing appropriate verbal and written feedback. The Instructor communicates with participants, families, professionals and MODC employees appropriately. The Instructor supervises other LIFE staff/students and volunteers in relevant areas. The Instructor develops and delivers personal attendant care plans, providing assistance to program participants with the activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed.

Duties / Fonctions:

  • Facilitate the delivery of the LIFE program for young adults
  • Assist Lead Instructor with lesson plans and assignments to program participants, curriculum updates, evaluations, data collection, reporting
  • Assist the Lead Instructor with receiving referrals, prescreening, intake interviews, and program scheduling
  • Assist with teaching duties including classroom management, behavior management, content preparation, methodology decisions, evaluation progress
  • Assist the Lead Instructor to:
  • Contribute to curriculum development research, design and develop curriculum to meet the needs of assigned participants
  • Develop lesson plans, adapt and modify training materials to meet the needs of individual participants
  • Assist the Lead Instructor to set and establishes appropriate and measurable goals for each and every individual
  • Assist learners with assigned work in accordance with instructor’s directions
  • Provide one-on-one direction as required
  • Administration tasks associated with planning activities, administering assessments, and tracking progress including but not limited to photocopying, mailing, and other office administrative tasks as required
  • Maintain participant files
  • Report incidents to Lead Instructor
  • Responsible for classroom set-up of equipment and materials before the start
  • Manage the organization and cleanliness of the classroom area
  • Manage workload and the work environment in a safe and healthy manner
  • Provide support with ADLs, such as toileting and feeding, in accordance with program participant needs
  • Assist with ambulation, positioning, and transferring
  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy
  • Performing other tasks delegated

Qualifications / Compétences requises:

  • College Diploma, University Degree, or equivalent in teaching adults, working with PWDs and/or college certificate program such as adult learning skills, social work/psychology/education/social work/business/public health/ or equivalent in experience
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification
  • Experience working with/teaching young adults with disabilities
  • Experience adapting traditional educational methodology to various disability types to accommodate individual participant needs.
  • Basic knowledge of common disabilities such as MS, spinal cord injuries, CP, aphasia
  • Ability to communicate positively in both verbal and written form
  • Ability to multi task, problem solve, make appropriate recommendations and take action
  • Good organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team
  • Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good understanding and interest in adult education
  • Interest in developing the abilities of youth and adults with physical disabilities
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, and ability to comply with its requirements

Salary / Salaire: $22.46/hr
