The Outdoor Education Instructor will be instrumental in developing and delivering Shawnigan’s Outer EDGE multi-day excursion program for grade 8 and 9 students, as well as optional trips for grades 10-12 with a focus on Experience, Development, Gratitude, and Engagement (EDGE).

This is a full-time, 1-year contract appointment beginning August 26, 2019, with time off in the summer months to accept outside employment. Significant flexibility in work hours is needed, as the position requires afternoon instruction, some morning administration, an evening per week in residence, and periodic weekend excursions and overnight trips.

Reporting to both the Assistant Head, Co-Curricular Programs, as well as the Directors of Arts & Activities and Sport, the responsibilities of the Outdoor Education Instructor include:

Program Development & Delivery

  • Organize and lead weekend trips for the grade 8 and 9 Outer EDGE program consisting of two trips for each student in each grade
  • Develop an optional grade 10-12 component of the Outer EDGE Program
  • Identify community, cultural, and service-based opportunities that emphasize first nations, while focusing on learning about Vancouver Island and its outdoor and First Nations cultures
  • Link outdoor activities to curriculum objectives in academic subjects
  • Provide students with certification opportunities, such as Wilderness First Aid, Swift Water Rescue, and avalanche safety certification
  • Provide trip support, including prep sessions, contract staffing, venue booking, and coordination with parents and various School departments
  • Assist the Assistant Head, Co-Curricular with developing the inaugural 2020 Vancouver Island local EDGE trip, support wilderness experiences for students during the School’s annual Ski Week, and assist with the Adventurous Journey experience for all grade 9 students

Risk Management

  • Work with the Risk Manager to develop policies, procedures and staff training resources
  • Create multi-year program plans for outdoor education at Shawnigan
  • Develop and maintain a purchasing, logging, and safety inspection system for equipment, as well as an equipment ordering system for students
  • Perform regular maintenance of program equipment
  • Develop an instruction and resources database
  • Develop risk management systems and incident response system, including an incident tracking and reporting system
  • Perform budgeting and financial planning tasks
  • Complete reconnaissance, vetting, and tracking of site venues and providers
  • Prepare Medical Action Plans and procedures surrounding student medical issues
  • Manage program staffing, including rostering of staff and staff training & development
  • Complete post trip administration and reporting


  • An intimate knowledge of outdoor opportunities on Southern Vancouver Island
  • Established connections with industry service providers and First Nations communities, as well as with Provincial and National Parks
  • Advanced First Aid certification and a post-secondary degree in a relevant subject area
  • Overnight Sea Kayaking Guide and Overnight Hiking Guide certifications from recognized accrediting organizations (e.g. Paddle Canada, Sea Kayak Guide Alliance of BC, NOLS, or equivalent)
  • Significant experience instructing high school students in sea kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, or white water kayaking.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing risk in variable and sometimes unpredictable instructional environments
  • Additional instructional experience in one or more of the following areas: Swift Water Rescue, Canoeing, Sailing, Backcountry Skiing, Mountain Biking, Surfing, Camping (summer and winter), Camp Craft
  • Skilled at working with teenagers, preferably in outdoor environments
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proven record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability and reliability
