DeafBlind Ontario Services is a not-for-profit organization that helps individuals who are deafblind to increase their independence and improve their quality of life through specialized services. Established in 1989, we have residential locations and community services programs across the province.

The Hours:

Availability must meet the needs of DeafBlind Ontario Services’ clients; typically, daytime, evenings, overnights and weekends.

What is an Intervenor?

Intervenors are specially trained professionals who act as the “eyes” and “ears” of the individual who is deafblind through the sense of touch.

An Intervenor facilitates access to environmental information that is usually gained through vision and hearing for clients living with deafblindness. The Intervenor will assist clients to gather information, learn concepts and skills, develop communication and language, and establish relationships that lead to greater independence and community involvement.

Given the unique needs of individuals with deafblindness, DeafBlind Ontario Services offers training for new employees, as well as ongoing and continuous training.

Some of the ways you will make a difference everyday :

  • Assist clients in reaching their full potential by communicating their needs, likes and preferences, and empowering clients to make informed decisions and be active participants in all areas of their lives.
  • Responsible to work as part of a team to support the client(s) in making informed choices and decisions. Follows activity plans, based on client’s personal plans and provide input on the client’s progress to the team.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of client strategy plans.
  • Provide personal care as required (e.g. lifts and transfers, toileting, personal hygiene, medication administration, gastrostomy tube, etc.).

Requirements:

  • Minimum of one-year post-secondary education in Intervenor for Deafblind Persons, Developmental Services Worker, Social Services Worker, Community Services Worker, Personal Support Worker or related field.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification.

We typically hire candidates with experience in the following disciplines: Developmental Services Worker, Social Services Worker, Community Services Worker, Personal Support Worker, Police Foundations, Paramedic Programs or related experience.
