Regional Cadet Support Unit (Pacific)

Position located at: VERNON CADET TRAINING CENTRE (VERNON BC)

Overview:

Vernon Cadet Training Centre (CTC) is located on the southern outskirts of the City of Vernon in the North Okanagan. During the summer months over 1500 Sea, Army and Air Cadets (youth aged 12-18) from Western Canada attend Vernon for summer training. Based on age, experience and personal choice of subject matter, cadets participate in training courses of 2, 3 or 6 weeks in length.

Vernon CTC is looking for 2 experienced Youth Advisors to join the Cadet Training Centre Wellness Team. The Cadet Training Centre Youth Advisor provides, as directed by the Cadet Training Centre Commanding Officer, short term, youth centered and solution focused guidance to Cadets. The Youth Advisor will also provide advice to the adult staff on youth development challenges and strategies used by educators and other youth care professionals

Roles and Responsibilities:

-Assisting Cadets / Staff with issues that may be affecting their success at training centre;

-Assisting Cadets to strive towards personal, emotional, social adjustment;

-Accommodating referrals from cadet staff, health care workers, and the Chain of Command;

-Accommodating self-referrals from cadets for issues that are affecting their success at the CTC;

-Assisting cadets to strive towards personal, social and emotional adjustment;

-Assisting cadets and staff with conflict management;

-Engaging the Dispute Resolution Centre if necessary;

-Providing crisis intervention, with handover to appropriate care providers as required;

-Liaising with police and social services in matters dealing with cadets;

-Working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to provide support to cadets;

-Meeting on a weekly, or as needed, basis with the Senior Nursing Officer (SNO) to provide information on cadets with issues of concerns and immediately transfer care of cadets with any perceived medical or psychosocial needs;

-Providing resources to Cadets IAW training centre policies;

-Participating in facilitating sessions on life skills using only reference material approved by the training centre;

-Working as a team member to ensure Cadets receive the best support and care possible;

-Maintaining discretion when consulting others on matters pertaining to Cadets and Staff;

-Providing confidential documentation as required, including workload statistical information;

-Referring all incidents of self-injury / suicidal ideation/ harm to others to the on-site medical staff;

-Participating in other related activities when required and approved by the training centre CO;

-Providing advice to the training centre CO on a cadet’s ability to function safely at the training centre and recommend returning home if required; and

-Adhering to all WHMIS, safety, security, and fire regulations and work practices.

Requirements:

Must possess a diploma, degree or post-graduate degree in Child and Youth Counselling, Social Work, Social Service Work or Education and Counselling.

Must possess recent experience in Child Protection, Child and Youth counselling, clinical social work or clinical counselling.

Must be able to obtain a Government of Canada Reliability Screening prior to employment.

Must be able to provide a current Police Records Check/Vulnerable Sector Screening prior to employment.

This is a full-time seasonal (July to August) position paid $243.00/Daily.
