Planning Work Experience Student (Development & Zoning Services) 8 months

Up to 4 temporary full-time positions for 8 months intended specifically for students currently enrolled in an architecture or planning program or equivalent post-secondary work experience degree program, commencing in January 2020
Superior customer service and the ability to work in a multi-functional environment will enable you to deliver planning support services as a member of the Development Services Branch.
As a Planning Technician I with the Development Approvals team you will respond to inquiries related to development and zoning services within the City of Edmonton to ensure compliance with the Edmonton Zoning Bylaw and Municipal Government Act.
Support a broad range of planning activities
Inform clients of the submission requirements for complete applications while providing professional customer service at the advisory and intake counter
Support with reviewing development permit applications, compliance certificates, encroachment agreements and other planning duties and inquiries to ensure compliance with the Edmonton Zoning Bylaw and Municipal Government Act
Assist with screening permit applications at the customer service counter and provide knowledgeable and timely responses to inquiries and provide technical advice and instructions regarding policy and procedures
Provide instructions for other City Services and refer customers to the appropriate departments for additional information
Support with the review and process business licenses and zoning permits
Assist with the collection, compilation and statistical analysis of data and information for the preparation of reports
Assist with developing implementation and training programs to support bylaw and policy changes or to enhance customer service opportunities
Other related duties as required

Currently enrolled in a planning co-op or equivalent post-secondary work experience program
Knowledge of the principles and practices of urban and regional planning
Demonstrated ability using Microsoft Office suite and Google Apps
Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to maintain strong working relationships
Demonstrated ability to manage projects with multiple elements, limited resources and restricted timelines
Demonstrated customer service skills
Ability to stand at the front counter for long periods of time during the day
Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
Additional assets would be skills, experience or knowledge of:
Reading site plans and building plans
Knowledge of regulatory, advisory, and other legislative bodies related to Land Use
Planning and associated policies, procedures, and regulations including the Edmonton Zoning Bylaw Statistical techniques, quantitative analysis and research methodology

40 hours per week, Monday - Friday.
$21.545 - $25.135 Hourly
