The Position:

Reporting to the Manager, Program and Services and in keeping with the mission, vision and values of Muscular Dystrophy Canada the Services Specialist is responsible for offering services, programs and support for individuals, families and groups affected by a neuromuscular disorders.


  • Contact all new registrants to establish relationship with Muscular Dystrophy Canada, introduce services and assess service needs
  • Assist those affected by neuromuscular disorders to navigate complex systems, work in partnership to access information and resources in order to meet the needs and goals of the service user
  • Make referrals as needed and follow-up with referrals made to external organization/services
  • Assists client with the transition and change (i.e. pediatric to adult health services, change in needs and circumstances) by offering supportive services, as well as, work in collaboration with service user to set and achieve personal goals
  • Facilitate connections, through delivery of network sessions, caregiver and family retreats as well as, one to one peer support
  • Liaise with neuromuscular specialists and other provincial Health Care Professionals
  • Plan, organize and implement community educational forums, workshops, peer support/networking, group events and chapter engagement
  • Work with key stakeholders to influence positive change through local advocacy

Candidate Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess:

  • A degree in health/human services or a related discipline
  • 5 years experience working with individuals affected by a wide spectrum of disabilities
  • Experience working with in the local services network for people with disabilities
  • Experience coordinating volunteers
  • Bilingualism considered an asset

This position requires a dynamic individual with a positive attitude, the ability to motivate others, superior written and verbal communication skills, and strong public speaking skills. Awareness of health and disability issues and the ability to use Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge 7 would be considered an asset.

This position requires a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle, with evening and weekend work required, along with regular travel throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
