General Manager – Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre

Jointly owned and operated by the Municipality of the County of Lunenburg and the Town of Bridgewater, the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre (LCLC) consists of an aquatics centre, an NHL-size ice surface with seating for 1250, multi-purpose and active living spaces, as well as a library.

Current management and operation services for The LCLC is currently being provided by Nustadia Recreation Inc. on an interim basis.The General Manager will report directly to Nustadia Regional Vice President until March 31, 2020 after whichthe position may report directly to the LCLC Governance Board. The position hasresponsibility for overall management of the facility including: human resources, marketing and public relations, operations, risk management, finances, and governance.

As the ideal candidate, you have senior level management experience in a related field such as recreation, sports administration, or community relations. Entrepreneurial by nature, you seek new ways to develop programmingandenhance servicedeliveryand have a proven track record of doing so.

You have a practical blend of knowledge in financial, administrative, operational, human resources and event management which will enable you to quickly earn the confidence of the Centre’s customers, employees, and stakeholders. Additionally, you possess well-developed interpersonal qualities including integrity, adaptability, communication and leadership skills. Experience managing a sport or recreational facility would be considered an asset, although not arequirementfor the position.

RESPONSIBLE TO: V.P. Nustadia Recreation until March 31, 2020 and at which point position may report directly to the LCLC Governance Board

NATURE OF WORK: This is a leadership and management position, tasked with overseeing all aspects of a quality multi-purpose recreation facility, the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre. The work includes: human resource management, marketing and public relations and promotion, special event and program development, risk management and board relations.

RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:

FISCAL MANAGEMENT

  • Develop new revenue opportunities and cost saving measures to sustain the immediate and long term responsibility of full cost recovery and financial stabilization of the facility.
  • Manage the day to day finance and administration duties including managing cash and payments, banking, AR, AP, bookkeeping, daily, weekly, monthly reporting
  • Preparation, management and rationalization of annual operating and capital budgets, presentations for approval to the Board.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

  • Develop, coordinate, assign, evaluate and supervise all staffing in the LCLC.
  • Supervise and lead all staff to be effective and responsible members of a team to improve the operation of the facility.
  • Possess strong people management and relationship skills to work with partners, the board of directors, staff, tenants and users of the LCLC.

COMMUNICATIONS/MARKETING/PUBLIC RELATIONS

  • Liaise with all users, tenants, the general public and partners.
  • Develop a Communication Plan and Marketing Plan.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT and EVALUATION

  • Plan and coordinate all programs, schedules and services in the LCLC
  • Coordinate the development and evaluation of safe, high quality programs.
  • Develop, incorporate and monitor a continuous customer service program in the delivery of all programming.

RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Delegate all maintenance and security functions in the LCLC
  • Develop, and maintain HR, operational, emergency, security and health and safety policies and procedures

PLANNING/COORDINATION/OPERATIONS

  • Prepare business plans and strategic plans, both short and long term, and a marketing plan in conjunction with the Board to ensure the facility has a strategic vision that is financially stable and meets the growing trends in community wellness and sport programs.
  • Negotiate and manage agreements or contracts with partners, user groups, tenants and other facility users or suppliers.
  • Establish and evaluate all operational rules, regulations and standards.
  • Identify and coordinate staff training opportunities

BOARD RELATIONS

  • Work strategically with the board of directors and partners to ensure the vision of the LCLC is clear and implemented.
  • Provide the board of directors with timely and accurate information.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Safe operation and care of a recreation or sport facility.

General facility maintenance.

Human resource management.

Staff, facility and event scheduling.

Financial management.

Modern building technology (air handling system, ice plant , pool, etc)

Working with a board of directors.

Developing business plans, strategic planning, and preparing and making presentations.

Experience in developing and monitoring multi-million dollar budgets.

Working knowledge of appropriate legislation related to operating a major facility.

Be able to deal with the staff, public, contractors, tenants and users in a polite, effective way.

Have superior oral and written communication skills

Be aware of and practice Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

Be proficient in using a number of computer programs and applications.

Understand the Nova Scotia sport, recreation and culture scene.

Understand the importance of sport and recreation in healthy lifestyles and active living.

Assess the needs of community with regards to aquatics, ice usage and fitness needs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Degree in recreation, sport, business or related discipline plus five years experience or equivalent education and experience in facility management

Evidence of continuous learning

SALARY ASSIGNED:

Commensurate with education and experience.
