Job Description:
In Sun Life’s Digital Solutions team we work to understand and respond to our Clients’ needs through the convergence of digital channels. Dynamic and fast paced, we are focused on application design, development and integration of one-of-a-kind, cloud and packaged applications to provide innovative digital experiences across several mediums including Web, Mobile and Voice solutions through Agile, Lean or Waterfall delivery methodologies.

About the role:
The Digital Front End Engineering Director will provide technical leadership across Digital Solutions User Interface (UI) and Accessibility practice, driving transformation in oversight and processes for web, mobile and voice. The Digital Front End Engineering Director will bring their front end development expertise and experience to lead a team to develop modern, rich and accessible digital solutions for Sun Life’s clients.

As an individual contribution leader in the Digital Development team, you will provide UI and Accessibility technical portfolio solutioning leadership, governance and processes for a team of highly skilled and collaborative Developers across multiple geographies. This position will report to the Assistant Vice-President, Digital Development and Innovation.

Your leadership and business management skills will allow you to:

Deliver as a technical leader, identifying new and emerging technologies for our Front End Engineering practice and apply your experience to solve challenging design and development problems.
Lead, coach and mentor staff to develop a high performing, highly motivated and engaged team of UI and Accessibility Developer professionals in Web, Mobile and Voice (eg Alexa).
Contribute to the talent attraction and retention while leading and evolving the UI and Accessibility program.
Promote a learning environment to develop the skills within the UI and Accessibility team members that align with industry best practices and organizational goals.
Contribute to the performance plans and objectives for the UI and Accessibility talent and provides honest, direct feedback in a timely manner.
Build team agility by assessing and anticipating knowledge/skill gaps and driving knowledge transfer and/or skill development.
Lead the technical evolution of the UI and Accessibility portfolio and partner/contribute to the enterprise Development Practice.
Lead team members from across multiple Digital Solutions teams in the completion of strategic initiatives in the areas of UI and Accessibility governance and best practices. Tracks and reports progress and issues to the Digital initiative sponsors.

Your technical acumen will allow you to:
Define the technical vision and direction of our Digital Front End Engineering practice.
Ensure proper coding techniques, code reviews, usage of DevOps pipelines and tools to mentor the Developers in your organization.
Participate in business partner and/or technical discussions to identify the technical scope and deliverables.
Build responsive sites but also create adaptive components or pages when needed.
Develop global digital solutions that meet the WCAG accessibility requirements.
Thrive on change in the organization, processes and tools.

Delivery of best practices will include:
Partnering with Business Partners, Account Managers and Delivery Leaders to gain an understanding of the business needs/strategies (current and future) and develop the supporting front end technology strategy.
Partner with the Development Practice Leaders to ensure appropriate succession planning is executed to avoid/eliminate key person situations.
Support the engagement of third party development staffing.
Support the engagement of offshore talent when used for staff augmentation.
Contribute to the recruitment and selections process.
Stays current with Front End/UI and Accessibility technology and best practices.
Accountable for the development of best practices by staying current with industry best practices and providing a forum for collecting and addressing feedback from staff.
Ensures the application of IT processes and best practices by identifying and communicating to staff.
Influence and support the elimination of non-value adding tasks.

Strong leadership skills that enables you to be comfortable working with cross functional technical teams and project issues across multiple locations.
An intense desire and strong focus on continuing to learn and grow as a Technologist. You thrive on learning new technologies.
Your knowledge and experience with Single Page Applications, JavaScript, CSS, Development stacks (eg React.js, Redux, Node.js, etc), Bootstrap (or similar frameworks) and responsive websites.
Ability to apply technology to improve timeliness, accuracy, quality and cost effectiveness of services.
Recognized as an Accessibility subject matter expert that can apply your experience with the web accessibility guidelines, tools and assistive technologies.
Share your experience with serverless design paradigms and cloud services (AWS, Azure)
Experienced in supporting talent management with a focus on recruitment and selection, performance management, performance development and coaching, rewards and recognition.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills that allow you to tailor messages depending on the audience (from Developers to Senior Leaders).
Driven but you are a servant leader that is ready to engage with other key stakeholders in a humble and productive approach.
Engaging and motivating the offshore team members (Sun Life and third party).
Superior organizational networking skills, working across teams in a shared service or organization matrix model with the ability to work with teams across multiple cities and vendors.
A self-starter with the ability to contribute while influencing the technical direction.
Conflict and issue resolution and escalation experience.
Proven business leader capable of delivering the appropriate messaging to staff and taking charge of special initiatives, as required.

Excellent communication (oral and written), facilitation, and presentation skills. You also possess the following technical skills and experience:

Proven UI and Accessibility development experience and ability to build and lead Front End Developers.
A Post-secondary degree or diploma in Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
Greater than 10 years of experience providing direct and/or indirect technical leadership.
Software design knowledge and practice within the Web domain.
Integrating complex and unique program/projects with numerous technologies and platforms.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
