POSITION

Reporting to the Tax Analyst, the Junior Tax Accountant position will hold a key role in sales tax advisory & compliance activities within Canada and the United States with respect to finance policies, procedures, plans/programs, and processes for compliance with laws and regulations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accurate and timely completion and payment of the required transaction tax returns (sales/use, business & occupation, gross receipts, and property tax) in all jurisdictions using information pulled from GP, Sage and Avalara.
Research and analyze complex sales tax issues based on sales tax laws, regulations, and rulings. Must be able to effectively communicate and present these findings, both orally and in writing, to various financial and non-financial personnel within the company.
Communicate with vendors, billing team, customers and taxing authorities responding to transaction tax questions and bring tax issues and solutions to the attention of management.
Monitor state and local sales and use tax developments, including understanding how these developments affect the company’s operations.
Prepare for, and assist with transaction tax audits and queries from tax authorities.
Identify operational activities that may create transaction tax nexus for a company.
Register for the transaction tax accounts in applicable taxing jurisdictions as required.
Close tax accounts that are no longer necessary.
Coordinate with other team members to develop and implement billing process improvements.
Assist with other miscellaneous tax and compliance filings such as certificate of residency application, Form W-8BEN-E, Form W-9 filings and tax exemption certificates.
Conduct special assignments or tasks assigned by the supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Post-secondary with degree in accounting or other related degree
Detail oriented and highly organized
Deadline driven/Ownership of work
Problem Solving/Independent/Ability to quickly learn new tasks
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPS, etc.)
Sales and use tax returns filing experience is an asset
