MARS Wildlife RescueCentre is a wildlife rescue centre that aims to rescue, rehabilitate, andrelease sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife on Vancouver Island. Our centre islocated in Merville, British Columbia on central Vancouver Island in thebeautiful Comox Valley. We are staffedby a Manager and Assistant Manager of Wildlife Rehabilitation, and many dedicatedvolunteers. As a student volunteer, you will become part of a team oflike-minded people and will be treated with respect and friendship.
MARS accepts studentvolunteer position applications all year round. These are unpaid volunteerpositions and are usually filled on a one to three month placement basis.
As a student volunteer,you can expect to be involved in all aspects of the rehabilitation process, althoughyour main responsibilities will be diet preparation, feeding, and cleaning. Volunteersmust be willing to work long hours and perform repetitive daily chores andtasks, and constant cleaning of the facility, including laundry, sweeping, and cagecleaning, as our wild animals are constantly creating a mess.
Along with the gruntwork, you will also learn how to properly calculate and administer medicationsto animals, proper rescue and rehab techniques, as well as how to handle alltypes of wildlife, including songbirds, raptors, seabirds, mammals, and occasionallyreptiles. You will be expected to take part in animal and bird rescues andreleases, participate in building projects and grounds maintenance, andparticipate in our community outreach program.
Spring, summer andearly autumn are what we call Baby Bird, Fawn, and Raccoon Season and is whenwe receive the greatest number of patients. Be forewarned, work at the wildlifecentre can be very demanding! In the summer, our skilled caregivers typicallywork a variety of shifts between 6 am – 10 pm, with occasional rescues, pickups,and drop offs outside of regular hours. The schedule at MARS can be intense,but you will also be given time to enjoy the beautiful scenery Vancouver Islandhas to offer.
Previous wildlifeexperience is not aprerequisite. Come here prepared to give100% to our wild patients and you will have an extraordinary experience.Interested applicants should be:

The wildlife centreoffers very basic housing and occasionally some meals, but for the most partyou will be responsible for your own food and other amenities.
