The R&D Manager will be responsible for leading efforts involved in process development and improvements under the direction of the Associate Vice President of R&D and Quality management. Initiate, evaluate, plan, direct, execute, implement, and report on activities related to the processing and manufacturing improvements, product quality initiatives and cost savings ideas Supervise activities related to documentation management and consumer services support.
This is a temporary (18 months) full-time position.
Critical Outcomes for this Role Include:
1. Assists in keeping Nature’s Path on the leading edge of product quality management:
Lead cross-functional teams in the technical aspects of quality, product or process through the investigation, planning, execution, evaluating and reporting on process development improvement and troubleshooting projects.
Attend plant trials and assist operations in developing plan and timeline for projects.
Complete technical assessments for evaluation of process opportunities.
Evaluate and make recommendations concerning the application of new ingredient/processing technologies.
Stay apprised of technologies used by other food manufacturers by reviewing technical literature and attending seminars.
Assist in locating and testing new ingredients and new suppliers.
2. Oversee the Sensory Program
Recommends sensory methodology and statistical analysis of results.
Uses discrimination testing to determine if differences are perceivable in consumer-packaged goods.
Lead and manage all shelf life related activities.
Ensure the on-going improvement of sensory and consumer research and champion initiatives to develop process and methods/systems.
3. Ensures operational standards for quality, cost, lean manufacture, food safety and sustainability:
Oversee Value Engineering Program: working with cross functional departments to develop project pipeline to meet annual cost savings target.
Act as a technical consultant to all operations units of the company on formulation / processing issues related to assigned projects / products.
Question processes, procedures and policies. Fully investigates, develops, and presents alternatives for implementation.
Develop understanding of any processes new to the organization; evaluates whether portions of that process are applicable to other products / projects.
Manage projects and plan costs (testing and implementation).
Assist in-house taste panels as required.
4. Assists in the assurance of customer satisfaction with quality, consistent products:
Oversee the entering and monitoring of all recipes in IFS database.
Attend classes / seminars to improve technical and interpersonal skills. Shares learning in cross-functional settings and applies learning to work assignments.
5. Manages direct reports:
Provides coaching, mentoring, and guidance to R&D Scientists and Technicians.

5 - 10 years: Product Development, R&D experience - From Concept to Commercialization.
Respect for or experience in the whole health/natural organics industry desirable.
Cereal extrusion and baking experience desirable.
Able to accurately prepare specifications, label declarations and formulations with no technical errors.
Strong business acumen and demonstrate business knowledge by leading discussion and direction on project work with the organization and determining effects of department work on total financial picture.
Able to identify opportunities and exhibit high energy and a willingness to be involved.
Knowledge in food chemistry and statistical analysis as used in designing experiments and measuring process capabilities.
Bachelor's degree or better
