Working under the supervision of the Directional Drill Supervisor, the Directional Drill Operator person is on a two-person crew. This position will operate a Vermeer Directional Bore machine and drive the support vehicle (s) used to transport this equipment to various project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload directional bore equipment in a manner that is secure and damage free
  • Transport associated tools, materials and/or equipment in a safe manner
  • Complete Driver’s logbook & daily vehicle inspection (pre-trip, en-route, post-trip), maintenance and repair reports, accident or incident reports
  • Complete a daily inspection on bore equipment prior to commencing work
  • Prepare the drill fluid based on site conditions prior to boring commencing
  • In conjunction with locator, operate the directional drill using the selected bore heads and back reamers to place cables and / or duct
  • Trouble shoot any equipment issues and relay to service technician for assistance or resolution
  • Able to operate the drill locater as required

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or relevant experience
  • Minimum 7 years of experience driving similar type vehicle as the support vehicle
  • Valid Class A driver's license with Z endorsement
  • Previous experience working around existing buried utilities
  • Must have previous experience and be proficient in the operation of a directional bore machine (or similar equipment) and associated locate set
  • Good communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to lift 23 kg (50 lbs)
  • Must provide a clean driving record (abstract) and criminal check prior to employment commencing
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must be fully proficient with CVOR and Book 7 requirements
  • Demonstrated commitment to health and safety and willing to receive applicable Health and Safety training as per legislative and job requirements.

Physical Demands

Must be able to perform the physical demands of the positions work tasks. These include but are not limited to working outdoors and in confined spaces, movement of equipment and/or materials, frequent climbing of ladders, frequent lifting and pulling of telecommunication cable in excess of 15 lbs. Attention to detail required. Will be required to stand for extended periods of time. All employees will be required to receive applicable health and safety training on an ongoing basis as per legislative and job requirements.
