Manager – Dark Horse Café (Geary St.)

Pay: $17/hour (included in employee tip pool)

Description: The Manager of Dark Horse’s Geary café will work closely with retail staff and upper management to maintain an amazing employee and customer experience, a profitable and growing business and the absolute highest quality of the coffee. Candidates must possess a strong business sense, natural hospitality and have outstanding emotional intelligence and soft-skills. The successful candidate will be excited at the chance to grow a coffee focused hospitality business and embrace the challenges that come along with it.

Working Conditions: The Manager will report to Dark Horse’s VP of operations but will work hand-in-hand with the entire executive team. Managers are expected to work full-time hours (35-40/wk) in a manner that balances their personal needs against business performance. Many managers workMonday through Friday. Saturday & Sunday may be needed as work level dictates. Weekly schedule fluctuates. Hours are extended when work-load is increased.

Responsibilities

Manage retail staff across the full spectrum of people-related functions including hiring, onboarding, training, evaluations and promotions, while upholding a culture that supports the positive development of all

Manage financial performance by growing top-line sales and controlling key cost categories (labour and COGS)

Engage with both the local geographical community and coffee community as an ambassador with a focus on building positive relationships and enhancing the Dark Horse brand

Act as a bridge between Dark Horse executive and retail staff to execute company-wide objectives and identify new opportunities (both large and small)

Execute Dark Horse policies and process including but not limited to tip allocations, cash management, store cleanliness, ordering, systems (7 shifts & POS), food safety, health & safety, hiring and make recommendations as to how these systems can be refined and improved

Lead all ordering, inventory management, storage and display related functions including conducting centralized orders for items that are to be re-distributed to all Dark Horse locations (sugars, chocolate sauce, tea etc.)

Act as store-level owner and by troubleshooting issues, filling-in on the floor and supporting crisis management as necessary (this is the hospitality business after all…)

Play a lead role in events at the store by supporting sales, staffing and execution

Support the bakery inside the café buy acting as a coordinator between production and other cafes and wholesale customers

Personally, deliver outstanding customer service and ensure that all staff members understand how to do the same

Study and understand Dark Horse’s product offering with a specific focus on coffee-related knowledge

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Management-level experience relating to cafés or food operations

A proven executor that has participated in the successful growth of food properties

Experience managing inventory and balancing quality and cost-effectively

Well-developed personality and a proven ability to build relationships across an industry or sector; connections in Toronto coffee a plus

Comfortable with key hospitality software including POS, scheduling and purchasing systems

Highly accountable and well-organized, with an ability to oversee a team of staff and prioritize multiple projects effectively

An insatiable curiosity and willingness to learn, anchored in constant pursuit of personal development

Collaborative and innovative consensus builder that encompasses all feedback and can inspire and influence staff, consumers and other stakeholders

A positive ambassador with strong communication skills and genuine kindness, thoughtfulness, responsible and an optimist
