Job Description:
About the role:
As Sunlife continues to expand its technology platform footprint we are looking for motivated individuals to join the Data Management Services team as a MongoDB Administrator.

This is an opportunity for someone that is expert in Mongodb but is also interested in working with multiple database platforms and architectures, NoSQL and SQL, OLTP, and OLAP. As an ideal candidate, you will have at least 5 years experience in Information Technology and an interest in relational and non-relational database technologies such as PostgreSQL, Redshift, MySQL, DynamoDB, Graph DBs, Time series DBs etc.

The candidate will be a member of a team within Data Management Services (DMS) called Alternative Database Technologies. Alternative Database Technologies is responsible database infrastructure architecture and operation support or teams using various cloud based and on premise database platforms. The successful candidate is expected to have a passion for database related technologies and will need to be able to pick up, understand and become proficient in a wide range of software products in a short period of time.

Alternative Database Technologies has members in Canada and India supporting a wide range of distributed applications. This position requires security clearance and you must have been in continuous residency in Canada for at least the past 5 years.

What will you do?

Manage small and medium size infrastructure projects
Participate in projects throughout the entire project lifecycle, and define, manage and track project deliverables using defined technologies
Keep up to date on current and upcoming technology innovations for use within Sunlife
Maintain up-to-date documentation and procedures for all supported database related platforms
Develop scripts to support the database operations on Windows, Unix or cloud based platforms
Support project development following documented standards, policies and procedures (Change Management Process)
Participate in a rotational on-call schedule
Participate, on occasion, in after-hours and weekend support of production implementations, infrastructure activities, and various disaster recovery exercises
Work closely with other team members, technical/team leads, management, specialized IT areas and application support teams to ensure consistent delivery and quality of database services
Define, document and implement consistent standards and procedures
Evaluate functionality and features within related database products.
Contribute ideas for best practice improvements, process improvement, and innovative solutions

What you need to succeed:
University level degree in Computer Science or related information technology degree/diploma
Keen interest and desire to work with multiple platforms and types of data repositories (Relational, NOSQL, Datawarehouse, OLAP, OLTP etc)
Proven desire and ability to learn new technologies or patterns in short timeframes
Advanced administration experience in Mongo
Performed extensive backups and restore using the MongoDB utilities i.e. Mongodump/Mongorestore
Worked extensively with the installation and management of MongoDB OPSMANAGER
Troubleshooting slow running MongoDB indexes and queries
Experience working with both WiredTiger and MMAPv1 storage engines with a clear understanding of both

Preferred skills:
Experience working in the AWS cloud environment is strongly desired
Problem solving, technical and conceptual skills
Ability to lead technical discussions and self manage workloads
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask efficiently
Ability to contribute solutions that meet or exceed business requirements
Willingness to share ideas and speak up in small, medium and large sized groups
Willingness to provide on-call support and trouble shooting

Assets:
Worked on migrating on prem MongoDB databases to Atlas.
NoSQL (DynamoDB, Neptune or other) experience
Redshift, MySQL, Oracle, Sybase, SQL Server experience
Understanding or experience working with Cloudwatch, Cloudtrail, AWS Config, AWS Backup and/or AWS DMS
Cloudformation, Glue and/or Lambda scripting experience
Understanding or experience with DevOps or Agile methodologies
Experience with database administration tools
Experience with Security Architecture(s)
Knowledge of database backup and recovery strategies (including DR strategies)
Some knowledge of data-mapping and logical and physical data modeling

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
