SUMMARY OF ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to and supervised by the Project Coordinator and with day-to-day supervision by the Sexual Health Research Nurse and working with a community-based research project with cis and trans women sex workers, the Community Health Associate (CHA) operates as a member of a diverse multidisciplinary and collaborative research team. The CHA recruits and prescreens potential participants (sex workers), conducts structured interviews; and supports point-of-care testing and self-specimen collection for HIV and STIs (swab or urine samples) and outreach activities connecting people with community services and supports. The CHA role works with the longstanding AESHA (An Evaluation of Sex Workers Health Access) project at the Centre for Gender and Sexual Health Equity (CGSHE) and operates out of the CGSHE community-based field research office in downtown Vancouver.

ORGANIZATION

Located in Vancouver, BC, CGSHE is a UBC/SFU-affiliated academic research centre housed at Providence Health Care (PHC) (www.cgshe.ca). The CGSHE has a strategic mandate of community-based research, policy and practice to reduce gender and sexual health inequities among marginalized populations in BC, Canada and globally. The CGSHE currently consists of over 80 staff, including academic and clinical researchers, graduate students, and frontline research staff, working out of our administrative and community-based research offices in Vancouver. We work in a highly collaborative team and strive to hire members from diverse backgrounds and lived experience.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Recruits potential participants, provides information and answers questions about research studies.

2. Prescreens potential research subjects and conducts informed consent in person according to study protocols and enrolls eligible participants.

3. Conducts quantitative structured interviews with eligible participants and performs outreach for follow up interviews.

4. Conducts and processes specimen collection of HIV and STIs: both processing of self-collected swabs or urine-samples, under the direction and supervision of the STI-certified Sexual Health Research Nurse.

5. Refers all positive or reactive results directly to the Sexual Health Research Nurse who oversees any follow-up testing, reporting of results, and treatment follow-up with the study physician, BCCDC, and in accordance with provincial STI and HIV guidelines.

6. Conducts pre/post-test HIV counseling and rapid point-of care testing (in accordance with Point Of Care training for allied and non-allied health professionals by BCCDC).

7. Conducts outreach and interviews off site at community services and/or other facilities with varying environments (e.g. massage parlours, microbrothels, drop-in centres, shelters, non-profit residences, private SROs, health care facilities, public spaces in inner city setting) using approved transportation options.

8. Adheres to informed consent procedures and ethical guidelines for research involving human subjects.

9. Reviews and translates questionnaires and other documents for completeness and accuracy.

10. Ensures policies and procedures for data management are followed and all documents are entered and filed as required by ethical guidelines.

11. Responsible for processing participant honoraria, including paying participant and recording honoraria for daily float reconciliation.

12. Transports blood and urine samples to St. Paul’s Hospital as needed in accordance with Transport Canada guidelines.

13. Participates in knowledge translation activities including presentations to community organizations and monthly staff meetings, as needed.

14. Assists with training staff on data collection protocols as needed.

15. Under supervision of the Project Coordinator adheres to established filing system and appropriate clinical research record keeping consistent with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

16. Refers participants to appropriate services and/or provides initial support when required.

17. Performs other related duties as required.

Education, Training and Experience

  • A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Degree or Diploma in a relevant Health Care Discipline or Social Work plus 3-5 years health, research, or community-based experience.
  • Completion of basic sexual health training, including STI/HIV knowledge, for allied and non-allied health professionals (e.g. Options for Sexual Health; BCCDC; or CATIE; HIV pre/post testing counseling and point-of care training for allied and non-allied health professionals (BCCDC); and Transfer of Dangerous Goods training.
  • Lived experience in Sex Work an asset.
  • Strong gender and social equity lens and knowledge and experience with underserviced populations (e.g. homeless women, sex workers, im/migrant women, women who use drugs).
  • Multilingual (Mandarin, Cantonese) skills required.
  • Class 5 BC Driver’s License.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated general computer skills to include database use, data entry, report retrieval.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and skills in recruiting and screening potential study participants.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of terminology related to sexual health, completing research questionnaires, reviewing and collecting data from research charts and maintaining related research records.
  • Ability to work independently following SOPs, while taking supervision and direction from coordinators, and within a diverse team environment.
  • Knowledge and skills to work with diverse community collaborators, service providers and other stakeholders.
  • Flexibility in day and early evening hours to support outreach and recruitment to study populations.
  • Expertise in gender, sexual health and marginalized populations, including sex workers, new immigrant/ migrant communities, and/or gender/ sexual minority populations.
  • Experience in community-based organizations and/or community-based research an asset.
