Scope of Position
Reporting to the Manager of IT Applications, the BI Developer is a seasoned professional providing strategic, analytic and project support to Alterna Savings as relates to the Data Analytics program. This role will involve understanding the business requirements and working closely with all business lines to ensure the program is closely aligned with our evolving business needs. The advice given and decisions made will have a measurable impact on the profitability or effectiveness of the organization.
Collaborate with business and IT teams to design databases, data marts, data lakes, and data warehouses to ensure stability, reliability and performance
Develop ETL processes to effectively move data into data repositories
Design, develop and maintain business intelligence and reporting solutions
Design and develop dashboards, reports, key performance indicators and metrics utilizing SSRS, Power BI and other front-end reporting tools.
Crafting and executing queries upon request for data and conduct analysis.
Work collaboratively in a team environment with the ability to interact effectively with other groups in the organization, both technical and non-technical, to ensure systems meet business demands.
Evaluate, maintain and troubleshoot existing applications and databases. Address production support break-fix in timely manner, keeping IT management and business informed of status and resolutions.
Communicate with all levels of management regarding information needs.
Translate business requirements into technical specifications that will be used to implement the required reports and dashboards, created from potentially multiple data sources
Provide support as required to ensure the availability and performance of developed reports and dashboards for users
Ensure proper configuration management and change controls are implemented for your sphere of influence
Design and implement technology best practices, guidelines and repeatable processes
Maintains technical documentation for all packages, descriptions of the data and data structures including data definitions, metadata, data models, and data flow diagrams
Recommend schedule and perform software improvements and upgrades.
Establish and implement policies, procedures and technologies to ensure operational best practices.
Provide on call support and after hours support as required.
Expectations / Outcomes
Recommendations for new approaches for continuous improvement at Alterna.
Ensure Alterna stakeholders will experience continuous uninterrupted access to the BI and ancillary services as per the agreed upon SLAs.
Development and execution of multiyear roadmap to ensure Alterna keeps abreast of changes in technology and business processes.

Senior IT Management
Consultants working for Alterna
University degree/diploma in a computer science or related field and equivalent working experience with business analysis/intelligence, and information technology related positions or assignments
Minimum of five years of experience with Business Intelligence development and analytics and database technologies
Minimum of two years of experience with Microsoft BI products. Including Power BI, Azure and MSSQL.
Background in data warehouse design (e.g. dimensional modeling) and data mining
Experience with architecting, designing, implementing, managing and supporting OLTP, OLAP or Warehouse Database Management Systems.
Experience with IBM Cognos would be an asset.
Proven experience as a BI Developer or Data Scientist
Experience in the creation, development, and writing of technical and training procedures
Experience in gather business requirements from a BI perspective.
Knowledge / Skills
Strong understanding of the Microsoft technology stack (Azure, SQL Server, Integration Services, Analysis Services, Tabular, Reporting Services, etc.)
In-depth understanding of database management systems, online analytical processing (OLAP) and ETL (Extract, transform, load) framework
Knowledge and experience with database design principles, including SQL, and ability to troubleshoot data issues within a database.
Strong understanding of data warehouse and business intelligence concepts and best practice methodologies.
