ACSA is a nonprofit, multi service agency addressing needs and empowering children, youth, newcomers, homeless, and otherwise underserved communities. Our core programs include housing and outreach programs, food security programs, newcomer services, youth outreach, child and family programs, food security, computer access programs, and community engagement.
ACSA is currently seeking a Drop-in Operations Worker for ACSA Scarborough Drop-in South. Reporting to the Manager of Homeless and Outreach Services, the Drop-in Operations Worker will be responsible for the operation of a satellite drop-in and food bank located at Markham Rd and Eglinton Avenue East. Serving people who are homeless or marginally housed, the drop-in and food bank will provide basic needs services, housing help and programs that help low income people meet their needs and develop strategies to meet their goals.
Summary of Position
The Drop-In Operations Worker is responsible for the operation and program development of a Drop-in serving the diverse community of homeless and marginalized people. The worker develops and maintains strong relationships with participants, agencies, faith groups, volunteers and other stakeholders in the community. The worker advocates individually and systemically on poverty issues.
- Maintain a safe, welcoming community space and clean environment in all areas of the Drop-In
- Support meal service and volunteers; prepare food, serve and clean-up as necessary; ensure appropriate waste management processes are followed
- Support the well-being of Drop-In participants through informal counselling, providing meaningful referrals and access to supports, including mental health or physician services, foot nurse, ID clinic, Rent Bank and other programs and services both internal and external
- Support conflict prevention and resolution processes. Initiate appropriate interventions for contraventions of Drop-In Code of Conduct (in conjunction with the HOS Supervisor), and ensure these are adhered to by clients.
- Communicate program, department, agency and sector information to Drop-in participants on an ad hoc basis and through holding monthly Drop-in meetings
- Complete a range of administrative duties including daily database reports, log and case notes, incident reports, monthly program brochure, tracking personal care supplies, and other statistical reports as required
- Keep up-to-date on issues faced by homeless and marginally housed people; become a maintain individual membership of Toronto Drop-in Network, and monitor TDIN website
- Maintain and circulate an up-to-date program brochure
- Work collaboratively with all programs of Homeless and Outreach Services department
- Coordinate and supervise volunteers and other groups assisting the program (e.g. Operation Springboard, Church Groups.)
- Liaise with various donors for food supplies, e.g. Daily Bread and Second Harvest
- Ensure all supplies used by the drop-in program (including cleaning supplies, bathroom supplies, toiletries and other items) are monitored, and procured
- Organize, store, and track inventory of drop-in supplies including clothing, personal care items; ensure that program supplies are obtained for social and recreational programs
- Receive food deliveries, store and dispose appropriately; shop for needed food items
- Train and supervise student placements as required
- Liaise with outside agencies to promote Drop-In and arrange for service linkages
- Manage and be accountable for transportation tokens (including intake, storage, distribution and reporting).
- Represent ACSA on external committees and networks as needed, including Toronto Drop-In Network
- Facilitate the implementation of a range of program evaluation tools/strategies to monitor service effectiveness and impact.
- Maintain a professional work atmosphere with a commitment towards a teamwork approach
- Perform the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Acts. Performs the responsibilities of the position consistent with the policies of ACSA
- Actively participate in regular supervision sessions, team meetings and peer support activities. Attend organizational meetings as required.
- Attend Housing Connections meetings, housing forums and information sessions
- Identify and attend training sessions related to this position
- Submit reports as required
- Act as a spokesperson for the agency and the drop-in whenever interacting with possible donors and the public in general.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Diploma/Degree in Social Services/Health and/or a minimum of two years related experience
- Thorough understanding of issues of homelessness, housing, mental health and addictions
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, sound counselling skills, strong boundaries, and ability to form relationships with marginalized individuals
- Strong relationship-building skills and experience with partnering agencies, faith groups, vendors, and other stakeholders
- Experience with maintaining and developing systems for services
- Knowledge of Residential Tenancies Act, Social Housing Act, Social Housing application processes, experience with TAWL a definite asset
- Sound judgment and good problem-solving skills
- Valid Driver’s License and clean Driver’s Abstract an asset
- Crisis Intervention, First Aid and CPR certification
- Food preparation experience desirable
- Safe Food Handling certification
- Competency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
- Clear and concise writing skills; able to write in both formal and accessible language
- Understanding of housing needs of, and barriers faced by homeless people
- Knowledge of community resources for homelessness, health, mental health and substance abuse
- Ability to work effectively and professionally when under pressure
The worker works from a storefront satellite location at 202 Markham Road. The worker will travel to ACSA Main site 4155 Sheppard Avenue and occasionally to locations in Scarborough and throughout the City of Toronto. Drop-in Operations worker works in office, kitchen, exterior locations and program spaces.
