Accountability Objective:

The Director of Clinical Services is accountable to the Executive Director for the direction of the nursing department in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures.

Background/Qualifications:

A Registered Nurse with current registration as a Registered Nurse with The College of Nurses of Ontario. Demonstrated leadership ability with comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care practices and techniques as they relate to long term care.

Must have at least one year of experience working as a registered nurse in the long-term care sector.

A minimum of three years of experience working as a registered nurse in a managerial or supervisory capacity in a health care setting.

Must have demonstrated leadership and communication skills.

Possession of planning, coordinating, supervising and implementing a comprehensive nursing care program.

Have competency skills as identified under The Occupational Health and Safety Act (1.26). Computer skills an asset.

Seeks out opportunities to maintain competency and continued learning in compliance with the Continuous Quality Improvement (C.Q.I.) Standards of Practice.

Key Responsibilities:

Plans, directs, coordinates and supervises the overall nursing program for residents within the home.

Promotes resident satisfaction and continuous quality improvement.

Promotes a positive team spirit within the nursing department and home.

Advocates on behalf of the residents when necessary.

Maintains contact with residents/families to ensure a high quality of care.

Review all resident applications for admission to determine appropriate level of care. Liaises with discharge planners, CCAC and families for appropriate placement. Assists with processing of admission and discharge papers.

Implements and monitors controls and safekeeping of drugs and narcotics. Supervises the medication administration program including the administration of medication by all registered staff.

Directs and monitors the maintenance of health care records to ensure and promote compliance with regulations and quality care for the resident.

Participates in Care Conferences as appropriate, meets with residents= family to resolve problems/concerns/complaints.

Assists the Executive Director by collaborating with the Medical Advisor to ensure that medical attention and records are in compliance with regulations.

Hires, orients, schedules, supervises and evaluates the performance of nursing personnel. This includes use of the disciplinary process.

Coordinates and/or provides orientation and in-service education for nursing staff. (in conjunction with Staff Development Coordinator, if applicable)

Assists the Executive Director in ensuring staff are knowledgeable about Resident Bill of Rights and Health and Safety Standards. Monitors and reviews resident care staff compliance with all facility policies and procedures, including safety rules and safe working practices.

Evaluates nursing staff performance by completing annual and probation performance appraisals, and others as deemed necessary.

Ensures the competency of staff through the process of identification, current certification and/or recertification for the performance of specific nursing skills.

Complies with the Long Term Care Homes Act, 2007 and all relevant Provincial and Federal Acts and Regulations, Human Rights Bill, Labour Act, WSIB, College of Nurses Standards, Regulated Health Profession Act., etc.

Assists the Executive Director with budget preparation and implementation for the Nursing Department.

Ensures the availability and maintenance of Nursing Department supplies and equipment to meet the unit needs and according to budget.

Responsible for departmental absenteeism and sick day management.

Liaises with other local health care facilities and educational institutions.

Participates in labour/management issues, eg. grievance procedures and labour management relations.

Establishes and maintains a relationship with other Managers and promotes team spirit and approach

Participates in the review process by regulatory bodies including Compliance Inspectors. Investigates complaints.

Establishes and maintains a relationship with other Managers and promotes team spirit and approach.

Prepares the Nursing Department for accreditation.

Coordinates and monitors the Infection Control Program for the Nursing Department in collaboration with the Infection Control Coordinator.

Coordinates and monitors the Palliative Care and Pain and Symptom Management Program in collaboration with the Palliative Care and Pain and Symptom Management Coordinator.

Coordinates and monitors the Psychogeriatric Program (PIECES) in collaboration with the PIECES Coordinator.

Maintains the Resident Care and Infection Control Manuals, ensuring they are current and available for reference.

Participates in facility committees as requested to promote a cross-functional approach.

Responds to Residents’ Council requests to discuss concerns/complaints/suggestions related to nursing.

Maintains and upgrades nursing knowledge and skills through ongoing courses and seminars and/or through self study

Participates in corporate meetings and task forces as requested.

Completes required reports for the Executive Director and Corporate Office in timely fashion.

Assists with research related to nursing practice.

Assumes administrative duties as required in the Executive Director’s absence.

Performs other duties as requested by the Executive Director and/or Senior Management.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: $93,636.00 to $100,303.00 /year

Experience:

  • Nursing: 3 years (Preferred)
