The Engineering Manager will be directly responsible for the planning and designing of engineering projects in the department. The Manager of Engineering develops and plans the design of all major projects while setting and maintaining the established budgets. The Manager of Engineering coordinates and directs projects and staff, and sets goals, budgets, and timelines for active projects.

Main duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate and direct projects, making detailed plans to accomplish goals and directs the integration of technical activities
  • Analyze technology, resource needs, and market demand, to plan and assess the feasibility of projects
  • Plan and direct the installation, testing, operation, maintenance, and repair of facilities and equipment
  • Direct, review, and approve product design and changes
  • Prepare budgets, bids, as well as take the Engineering lead on RFP / RFQ and RFI activities
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies, standards, and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed in the department
  • Perform administrative functions such as reviewing and writing reports, approving expenditures, enforcing rules, and making decisions about the purchase of materials or services
  • Review and recommend cost estimates
  • Present and explain proposals, reports, and findings to clients
  • Direct the coordination of special projects for the Engineering Department
  • Assign projects to engineering staff, set priorities, and adjust workload accordingly
  • Provide technical oversight and coordination of project engineering work; through project coordination meetings and other means
  • Monitors progress against project schedules and budgets; recommends allocation of resources as required to accomplish goals
  • Reviews inspections reports and assists in resolution of field construction problems
  • Monitors expenditures after budget adoption
  • Interviews and hires new staff; prioritizes, assigns and reviews work, approves time off for payroll purposes, and prepares and reviews employee performance evaluations
  • Communicates with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates; Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, email, or in person

The successful candidate will ideally have an Engineering degree, or the equivalent of 10+ years of engineering experience and education. Relevant experience in the design / construction capacity is required. A minimum of 5+ years in a supervisory role is necessary, as this position will lead a team of approximately 10 engineering staff. Candidate must demonstrate a thorough understanding of Canadian Engineering standards, theories, and principles. Strong leadership qualities and excellent communication skills are a must. The successful candidate will have the demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, make decisions, problem solve, and manage time and costs effectively.
