The McMaster University Medical Centre site of Hamilton Health Sciences is home to McMaster Children's Hospital. As of April 04, 2011, a specialized Pediatric Emergency Department provides care for infants, children and youth 17 years of age and under. Our dedicated team of health professionals provides family centred emergency care that embraces teaching, research and health promotion. Commencing in late 2009 the Paediatric Emergency Department commenced an extensive expansion and renovation to better serve our increasing paediatric patient volumes. Upon completion in 2012, the new Department will have the capacity to serve over 40,000 paediatric visits per year.
The primary focus of this position is paediatric emergency care. Through in-depth psychosocial assessments, the Social Worker will identify child and family strengths, stressors, problem-solving abilities, dynamics, interactions, attitudes, feelings and cultural issues in relation to the needs of the acute patient and family visit in an emergency department setting. The Social Worker will work collaboratively with the team to perform interdisciplinary assessments aimed at developing and implementing a plan of intervention, which addresses education, coping and compliance. This will be achieved through a variety of modalities including individual and family interview, consultation, crisis intervention, patient and family education, community outreach and advocacy. The Social Worker will identify and make referrals to appropriate supports and resources and assist families in accessing financial assistance programs when necessary.

1. Current Certificate of Registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
2. Masters of Social Work degree from an accredited School of Social Work
3. Demonstrated excellence in interview skills and ability to provide comprehensive and timely psycho-social, mental health and risk assessments, and then develop and undertake a plan of action based on the assessment
4. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment and provide crisis intervention
5. Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills
6. Demonstrated excellent teamwork skills
7. Knowledge of community resources and referral processes
8. Proven ability to organize, priorities and problem solve effectively and ethically
9. Familiarity with the Mental Health Act, Consent to Treatment Act, Substitute Decisions Act and Child and Family Services Act
