Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. About the Library
Mount Royal University’s Library plays an integral role in ensuring the University meets its mission to provide an exceptional undergraduate educational experience. The Library team is comprised of 58 full time employees. The Library supports innovative teaching, learning and research, including student undergraduate research, with a full range of on-site and virtual services and resources.. The Library supports approximately 12,000 students and approximately 2,500 faculty and staff.
Mount Royal University’s new Riddell Library and Learning Centre, home of the Library, contains state-of-the-art specialized instructional labs and technology-enriched learning spaces, expanded physical collection areas and an enhanced technology infrastructure to ensure ongoing support of growing digital and specialized data collections. The services and facilities of the Library provides an exceptional undergraduate teaching, learning and research experience for MRU students, faculty and staff. It is the intellectual heart of our campus and a resource that will continue to engage our community and beyond.
About the Role
The Emerging Technologies Assistant (ETA) supports students, faculty, staff and community members within the Library’s technology-rich spaces (such as Visualization Classroom, Ideas Lounge, Immersion Studio, and Experience Lab). Key responsibilities for the ETA include facilitating the use of Library technology by delivering technical workshops, supporting Library programming and providing general troubleshooting and maintenance assistance. The ETA helps to optimise the use of the Library’s specialised tools and spaces by facilitating and supporting users seeking to enhance their teaching, learning, and scholarship through the use of these tools and spaces.
Working with colleagues across the Library, MRU ITS, and faculties/units across campus the ETA will be responsible for developing and supporting internal and external library programming, providing instruction and troubleshooting to users on how to access and use the diverse technologies (including but not limited to, virtual reality headsets, 360 cameras, large multi-touch media walls and 360 projection rooms), spaces, collections and software. The position is also responsible for providing public services to library users, including providing one-to-one research support and instruction, assisting users in accessing information in physical and online environments, and assisting users with a range of equipment and technology. This work requires a user-centered public service focus; a high degree of responsibility, creativity and self-motivation; strong technology-related skills; and excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills.
Normal days of work are Monday - Friday; hours may vary.
Support for the Library’s Emerging Technologies Programming
Supporting the Emerging Technologies Specialist, help to develop supportive programming including workshops and training sessions to assist the campus in the effective integration of emerging technologies including but not limited to, virtual reality, augmented reality, 360 projection and high-resolution multi-touch digital displays.
Assist with coordinating and scheduling campus and public programming in the Library’s emerging technology spaces, as well as other bookable Library spaces, as needed.
Coordinate and maintain the booking of training and equipment within the emerging technology spaces with users, as needed.
Provide consultations, training, workshops, and classroom visits, for Library users on accessing and using the Library’s emerging technology spaces, technologies, and collections.
Use analytics to prepare and analyze regular usage reports for emerging technology spaces and technologies as needed; recommends ways to improve visibility and usage of spaces and technologies, as needed.
Liaise with the Copyright Advisor to ensure appropriate use of licensed content.
User Support and Technical Assistance
Provide technical support and set-up for workshops, events, and classes in the Library’s technology-rich spaces.
Provide scheduled and on-demand technical support and troubleshooting to Library patrons using emerging technologies (including but not limited to, virtual reality, augmented reality, 360 projection and high-resolution multi-touch digital displays) and software (including but not limited to, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Canva, Google Tours VR, Unity, Facebook Spark and more) in the Library’s technology-rich spaces, escalating as needed.
Responsible for regular assessment and coordinating basic maintenance, regular inventory and recommendations for repairs / replacement / changes to library technology-rich spaces.
Provide public services to Library users
Perform reference interviews to respond to, identify, assess, and clarify information needs of Library users at the Library’s public service desk
Provide one-to-one instruction and assistance to Library users, in both virtual and physical environments, to assist them in meeting their information needs.
Maintain expertise in a range of information resources, databases, subject areas, and in searching and evaluation skills.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in a related field such as new media production, information technology or communications.
Minimum 2 to 3 years in technology support and training with both colleagues and clients
Creativity, ability to solve problems in a self-directed manner while supporting, training and instructing library users with a wide range of skills and literacies is crucial to success in this role.
Demonstrated commitment to excellence in public services and an ability to function in a team environment is crucial.
Experience and expertise in providing troubleshooting, support and training with emerging technologies for teaching, learning and creation, would be considered an asset
Experience working directly with users in an academic environment, would be considered an asset
Experience with the following broad range of technologies and tools would be considered an asset:
Software: Adobe Creative Suite, Unity, Unreal Engine, etc.
XR tools: Oculus, HTC, Ricoh Theta, GoPro, etc.
